What's the purpose of a sandwich coin?

I read the thread about the 1932-D Washington and didn't understand why someone should cut a coin which is already rare. I could understand if the D was added (like it happened in Pawn Star! 
).
Is just because the reverse wasn't in the same state of the observe?

Sorry if I insist, it must definitely be my bad english.
If you already have a 1882-CC (I am not an expert, but I think this is the most valuable between the two), why you need to stick a reverse from a different year?
