What's the purpose of a sandwich coin?

I read the thread about the 1932-D Washington and didn't understand why someone should cut a coin which is already rare. I could understand if the D was added (like it happened in Pawn Star! ).
Is just because the reverse wasn't in the same state of the observe?
What am I missing?

Take a 79-P morgan and a common 1882-CC reverse, combine them. What do you have.

Something much more valuable then you had before.

Better yet cut a common unc 1889 philly coin in half and glue that
half the the reverse have of that 82cc. Unc 1889-CC!

Sorry if I insist, it must definitely be my bad english.

If you already have a 1882-CC (I am not an expert, but I think this is the most valuable between the two), why you need to stick a reverse from a different year?

Because a 79-CC is worth much much more.

Ok, I think I got it. The date is on the observe and the mintmark on the reverse.
