It's hard to tell from the pictures. But based on the description, it sounds like gas bubbles from the electroplating process.

I've seen coins with long gas bubbles; almost the entire face of the coin.

Thanks Papi for the looksee.....this "error" is on two different "d" mint satin finish copper cents (same presidency coin, two sets) , so not sure what the process is. I guess it could be a gas bubble, but the two sets

that these came out of were sent to me together so they must have been minted at about the same time. They are identical, (solid line like raised metal) so it puts a little doubt in my mind about gas bubbles....

In another satin u09 set that I received today (again "d" mint) I have the wddr-005 (double thumb) on the Formative cent. It's one of the better double dies in the satin series to me, much more easily seen.

I'm not sure what if any premium it holds value-wise, but it is better than a "gas bubble" haha.

If any other pros here want to comment or educate, please do. image

I don't think it is a gas bubble on the satin finish copper cent. The gas bubbling would only be on regular circulation strikes due to the copper plating over the zinc. Remember Satin finish are copper coins. Look like you're back to square one.

So, not a gas bubbling effect......that's what I thought but wasn't sure of the minting process on these satin copper cents. Anyone else have any theories, observations, or analysis they'd like to share?

Should this be forwarded to someone who specializes in error/variety/attribution coins for further examination? Hope the pics show the raised metal line well enough. It's Saturday so I'm also hoping most of you are

at home ready to jump in on this....I appreciate the professional experienced voices that can help me evaluate the coin pictured and value the education I can gain here. So, thanks for your ideas in advance.

    I stand corrected, thanks

I forget satins are copper. I keep thinking it's only proofs that are copper.

Forward the coin to one of the three folks below. There are fee's involved so be sure to read the submission guidlines.

    James Wiles of CONECA

    John Wexler of NCADD

Billy Crawford of Die Varieties Magazine

Each would be more than happy to examine and attribute your coin. James Wiles requires that you send him an email before submitting and I would suggest the same for the others as well. These folks are nationally known and do this close to full time. They are very good and well respected.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    COOL!!!

I thought the afternoon times were bad for this date?

    I have a 4/23/09 14:05 9774, and 2 4/23/09 14:08 9883

Maybe there is hope for my boxes.

    Joe

Also someone mentioned the 4/29 date: I opened 5 boxes and found nothing, don't know the times of the boxes.

    Good job and congradulations!

That is the way it is with the 4/23 boxes. They are very spotty. I have opened about 10 boxes and did not come up with that many in any one box.

Most contained from one to three.

    Thanks

I was also shocked, but I thought "Jackpot!". I never got that many in one box either.

I was also surprised to see the obverse crack started in LP2 boxes. I thought the crack occurred later, in bank boxes.

Opened a box dated 4/16 at 13:50 9774 yesterday and thought I would find the big die crack 13b.....nada, zip, zilch.....I did however find 8 of the wddr-004's so it wasn't a complete waste. I had been finding the

13b's in the 4/15 boxes, but someone had mentioned that they were also found in the 4/16's so I bought a box just to see.....maybe the time was too late.....anyone know the ideal time and batch to find the 13b's?

That is interesting. If they are in LP2's, that means that that die did not last very long in the bank boxes before it gave out.

It's the beginning of the crack, but visible in the fold of the lower vest. Then another coin, where the crack begins to extend down towards the rim.

I guess, maybe, this might change Wexler's stages, but I'm not that much into the stages. Except when it has a HUGE crack.

    Love those HUGE cracks !!!

    That is my favorite also.

All my 13B die cracks were found in 4/16 boxes, only 1 didn't have any. They were all early times. Found between 1-5 in each box (41 out of 16 boxes).

    I still have 20 plus 3 NGC MS66's (one on eBay now--spam).

I have yet to find any in boxes. I bought 9 of them (oo6) for less than I paid for the 3 boxes.

I am in the camp that believes that these major errors are very limited.

Pitboss....I've been lucky I guess because every box I've purchased has had the correct rolls (errors) that I expected to see for those dates. I don't even know how you could open and re-seal the tops of these boxes

without it being obvious. I hope you reported your findings to the seller and/or Ebay. Any seller's names you'd like to share to help us avoid for future purchases?

The way they were resealed with glue. I assume they used a sharp knife to slice open the boxes very carefully so you would not notice anything from the outside and just applied fresh glue.

Look for knife marks on the outside of the boxes.

When I discovered that this was being done I stopped buying and resold what I had left with a warning to the buyers that I was not positive but I felt these could be repacks. I took a licking on what I got for them. Some of them I bought for $40 apiece . This was 6 months ago and I have not bought any since.

I do not remember who I bought them from but beware.

I had the same feeling around September last year when everybody and there brother were selling the errors on ebay. I bought some boxes and I suspected they were resealed so I returned them and have not bought any since. The boxes I have were all bought with knowing the dates and times early in June, July, August and checking them. I have had a similar experiences buying unc US Mint sets. They would slice the end and reseal them, Started noticing sets like this in 2006. So now I pull back the corners and make sure they have only been glued once. My advice is Get to know the mints packaging glue from items you buy direct. By the way I have done this with every purchase from ebay since 2006. Hope this helps someone on future purchase of US MINT products. Mike

Pitboss, I wasn't following your listings on Ebay....did they sell? I've been scanning the Bay again for boxes that are good buys for good dates, but they are far and few between. Seems like the good dates are becoming extinct. I still like opening the rolls and looking for these errors. I can't spend alot on coins, so this is a cheap way to go and still feel like there is a little numismatic adventure to enjoy. So, I will coninue to fish around for the keepers.

I have them listed "auction style" and have sold 9 of them so far. They are all MS 66, both MS 001 and Ms 002's. I still have another 14 to go and they are moving slowly but I am making a few bucks on each one. I am not selling any of my MS 67's. This is getting a few out there so I am happy about that.

So an ungraded WDDR-006 "sells" for $149 and a week later a MS66 WDDR-006 couldn't sell at $34....just seems strange to me
