Not much about that auction makes sense to me.

-The MS66 in the item specifics is against eBay policy for that slab
-Called: "Super Gem Gem Unc" in the title (Whatever in the hell that means. Sounds like an outburst from a Japanese gameshow host.)
-Called: "Near Gem Uncirculated" in the body of the listing
-Called: MS66 on the PCI slab.
-His "30 power zoom lens" must have taken a shot of the coin from across the room because he ended up with nearly full slab shots that measure 263px × 400px.

I cant really say anything bad about the coin or the holder, because they are indecipherable. But I can say his auction sucks.

This seller puts numerical grades in almost all the auctions they list slabbed or not. Has been for ages.

My understanding he bought DGS grading from David Lawrence, which in turn was the old pci and is starting to slab PCI coins now. There was a forum recently on here and the Vam sight. People at 1st thought there were fake PCI slabs Hitting the market, it was latter learned he was starting up slabbing PCI SLABS.

So the original question stands is the a new made slab or an original old one?

    NOT an old PCI slab.
The g in mintage is wrong (along with other tells, in the lettering and grade font) and proves otherwise.

This was the new/weak PCI before they went gold label on us. Same sorry graders.

Now, the "old PCI" has some charming coins within, many bouncing into PCGS plastic at or even higher in stature and grade.
Not the one in this auction though.

Impossible to tell from the photos but wouldn't be surprised if it ranged from AU58 to MS63/64- if there are no problems.

The color of the green ink on the label looks wrong to me, but it could be the color balance on the picture; or I could be wrong. I’ve never been an admirer of PCI slabs.

Unless I'm cinfused (don't pile on) David Lawrence Rare Coins (John Feigenbaum) bought PCI, retired the name, and now slabs his own product in DGS (?) slabs. He happily makes a buy/sell spread on anything in his holders. Sharp, honest, solvent, and I hear he has good service. One of the best platforms serving the hobby and run by a very savyy business mind with great ethics.

Kevin McNerney ( founder of NTC) bought DGS, (lock, stock and barrel) from John Feigenbaum in the last six weeks or so and has decided to 'resurrect' PCI. Looks as though he is trying to hook unassuming buyers by a) selling them alongside PCGS to make them look more believable and b) using the old green labels to further confuse less aware folks into believing that they are the 'older' PCI, conservatively graded coins and c) sell these coins based on the fact that PCI is still listed on the greysheet (furthering his goal of legitimacy).

So does the slab!! The images for this piece are not very sharp at all, and the slab just doesn't seem right. I would stay away from this auction...

I don't know about the Gaudens, but the 87-S Morgan slab is all wrong. I've owned hundreds of these older PCI slabs and this one has several issues. First, the ten digit serial number on the reverse is indicative of the older green label slab. The sixes in MS66 should not be rounded, they should point straight up . Also, I have not seen any of the PCI slabs show PL on the same line as the grade. Back then, they put the PL indication in the top right corner. I wouldn't go near either of those coins.

Interesting thread. So far, lots of comments about the plastic "slab" and nothing about the coin. Isn't this hobby about the "Coin and NOT the plastic". I'm no gold series expert, but I'd like to hear from the true hobbyists about this particular coin and not the debate about the "plastic" that it is in.

Dude, the people are trying to warn you about the coin and conclude what type of holder it is from PCI. I see either a counterfeit holder or a new version that most certainly does not have the same standards that the old respectable PCI had. The 10 digit reverse insert does not match the correct obverse font from the "good" old PCI holders. I'd run from this one. The Green PCI holder never had this combo of inserts. Conclusion: Warning Will Robison........ And how could you evaluate the coin from the Moon shot pics???

The moral of this is the person selling these is and passing them off as old PCI green labeled coins. Who cares what they are graded by the company now , the new co can say hmm it is maybe border line 65 and then slap a 66 on it,.

I have been informed the seller is not the maker of these.

Let me get this straight. . .

PCI is now legitimately owned by Kevin McNerney who has decided to go back to the old green PCI style.

The link in the OP leads to an eBay auction with a PCI green holder, a 1927 $20 graded MS66.

This is the new PCI green holder style.

The seller of this coin on eBay is not Kevin McNerney, the new owner of PCI.

The seller of this 1927 $20 thinks this is the old style PCI holder but is mistaken.

I remember when DGS started up, they had a problem getting their slabs accepted on eBay. You know how eBay is, protecting the public and all. Um, anyway, I had been awaiting the big moment when their slabs would finally be accepted, and now this. Oh well. Easy come, easy go. I guess I crack my coins out of these defunct DGS slabs, now. Or, I wonder, is this new company standing behind these grades?

I have about a dozen conservatively graded gold coins in the old PCI slabs. I guess I'll have to get them regraded by another TPG.image
