Nothing like hearing it from Jim himself, very lucky to be able to post and tell us about that terrible experience. Best of luck in a speedy recovery!

The other point the Jim made about being armed was eye opening as well. Just because you have guns doesn't mean you'll be able to use them, whether they are behind the counter, or you just get outnumbered quickly by multiple thugs.

Thank God you are alive!! That is what really counts. I hope you bounce back quickly.

If you have reservations about reopening...you can hire an off duty police officer(in full uniform) to hang out in you shop with you. At least for the first few weeks or so.
Again...Thank God you lived through this. Head injuries are serious business!!

Jim glad your ok and on your way to recovery. I don't know if your able to ...but how about hiring a security guy that will be there when you open and close the place just in case those two .... God forbid ..decides to come back and try again? Just up until your fully recovered.

sure glad to hear out of Jim, in person. get well soon, bud.

One of the increasing problems we will face/do face as a society is the danger from gangs. It is even worse when those gangs are trained, former military members. Don't laugh, the military has many, many gang members in it. If an undesirable few of these types decide to, they can and will wreak havoc on society. I contend we are already witnessing a number of these incidents, incidents that law enforcement just as soon would leave unreported to the unsuspecting public. A few, well-trained former military types can overpower just about any one of the general public. (ed. - it's not just superior numbers of attackers, it's tactics as well.)

    maybe I'm wrong...

I am so glad you have recovered enough to update us. I pray you will have a full recovery. Including restarting your business.

A traumatic event like this can make you rethink whether it is worth it. If you are doing what you enjoy doing, it is. If you feel it is a hazard to you and your family, it isn't. One of the big downsides to being a B&M dealer is the big target you place on youself and your family. Even if you operate a mail-order business with an office, as I do, you can still be a target. I recently had an article in the local paper about me and I made sure that they did not mention where my office was located. Even so, instead of being happy to be in the local paper, it made me paranoid. I have been extremely cautious lately.

Bob Palmenter had a similar incident happen a few years ago. He said at the time he was giving up coin dealing. After a year or two, he thankfully has decided to get back into the business. Take some time to let the trauma subside before making any life-changing decisions.

Jim - I'm glad you made it through this. And on a side note, I've often dreamed of opening a coin shop in retirement, when I'm too old to travel. But stories like this make me think that I'm going to have to learn how to fish instead.

Jim, Thanks for the update. I'm so very soory this has happened. I do realize these type of events lead to great reflection about what is so truly most important in life. Should you choose not to return to retailing your presence will be missed. I'm sure that is a decision you will have to make in the future. I however would continue to be a customer and friend. I wish you a speedy and full receovery. Sincerely, Gary.

    Jim –

I am so very sorry to hear about this event. This must have been absolutely terrifying. This is so sad.

That said, I’m so happy you survived this senseless attack. I thank God for that, as this could have been much worse. I sure hope they catch these low-life 'sub-humans'. I hope you fully recover from this incident soon. I know this will be a struggle, mentally. Hang tough, Jim. This industry needs more, not less, dealers like you. You're class act.

    Take care, my friend.

When you do reopen, if you feel a little on edge, send me a PM and I will come out there and provide security for a week or so on my own dime. I will also bring a few friends with me and we evaluate and set up some long term security and maybe make a few changes to SOP. Serously let me know, the firm I own are specialist in these kind of things.
