^^Actually not the same coin. Sure looks kind of like it though but the insert number is a couple off (graded in the same batch).

Thanks for pointing this out. It's interesting that the numbers are so close, 18267780 and 18267782.

Why is the slab completely b&w? Makes it look like the coin was photoshop'd onto the image (as was the Teletrade sticker, obviously). Not saying games are being played but it makes me wonder.

There was a thread on this coin (and one other) within the last month and questions as to whether it was NT or AT. FWIW it does not look right to me.

Unless you are a "blue" nut like Colorfulcoins, I'd pass...if the coin was raw, most all would say AT...sorry for being the grinch.image

Those three with the cert #'s so close all look too similar/suspicious to me. E PLURIBUS UNUM, on all three coins, has the same golden color. It's not my series, but I smell sumthin'.
    I'll come up with something.

In 1957 FMC came out with Azure Blue, a pretty close match to this 1958 model.

no - more specifically , instead of the slang term "gassed" -

i should have more correctly said "done" , as in colorized by chemistry

Poorguy wrote the following on these coins in this thread:

<< <i>I do not support doctoring or AT coins to any degree but, through my own simple experimentation, that color combination and pattern can be easily reproduced by boiling an egg, crushing it up, putting it in a plastic container, put a bunch of paper towels on top, put the frankie on top of the paper towels, seal lid, wait 30 minutes, open lid and it looks identical with purply blue mottled coloration. Again, I do not condone doctoring but experiment yourself to educate yourself on what to look out for. However, with this toning from the egg, you can easily wipe it off. >>

Here's some additional info on these coins from the thread:

<< <i>The reason I know these are not mint set toners is they have the type 2 reverse. The '58 mint sets only contained type 1s. >>

This is true but these have the type 2 reverse and the '58 mint sets contained type 1s.

Here's a third coin from the same submission.

The fact that PCGS graded all three a the same time, my gut tells me they're NT.

PawPaul, when it comes to Franklins I could only hope to dance in your shadow.

When it comes to toning I trust my gut (and, PCGS's on-sight, in hand opinions).

well .........I bought the '54 pictured in this thread , even though I should not have as I believe it's not N.T

....I did not even consider bidding on the blue/purple 58-P's though- even though PCGS and other knowledgeable folks believe the toning is legit

    this whole N.T/A.T issue is always going to be unresolvable ;

many of the posts asking if a coin is real or fake toned end up with 1/2 the people saying it's N.T ,

and the other half saying it's A.T

even though the consensus on the 3 '58's was A.T - the one pictured in this thread brought $500 !!

and I went and put a max bid of 500$ on the '54 pictured in this thread , even though I knew it came from questionable origins .

It would seem , and maybe rightly so - that once PCGS slabs any given coin : it becomes N.T .....................even if it's not !
