Sharing my Peace set (large pics)

I thought I would put up some pics of my Peace dollar set after I feel I've achieved a reasonable level of completion. The set thus far has taken about 2- 2 1/2 years and has been pretty fun to collect! The unfortunate (or great?) thing has been that I started out with average standards (XF or better) but that bumped to AU or better and now I only really like high-AU pieces!

Hopefully some of the quality will come through although I took the pictures in a dull bank closet with one lonely lightbulb. I ended up buying a few slabbed as I was getting tired of looking through all the 'super slimey fake-AU dreck'. The 34-s still remains for my set and I've actually returned several examples - doesnt seem like there are many with great eye appeal in the au range.

My 28-s and 27-d are rather baggy and probably my last candidates for upgrade but I think the rest are pretty solid. image Grade-wise the 28 really sticks out, but it holds special meaning for me as I purchased it in a lot of peace dollars for $12 or $14/ea - I dont have the heart to upgrade it!

Nice! Now just crack 'em out and put them in the book. Don't be afraid, the water's warm!

Nice set.... very little tarnish.... Well done. Cheers, RickO
  • Getting nice Peace dollars with good eye appeal is really, really hard. You wouldn't think such a beautiful coin could be so ugly so often! It's a great set for teaching that grade and eye appeal are two very different sorts of things, and a good way to challenge anyone on just about any budget, since one could in theory put together a set at less than $100 a coin, except for the 1928, which with a bit of hunting can be found for under $400. But, even with $1000 or more to splurge on every coin, you're still in for a tough time sorting through some ugly, splotchy pieces to find the good gems.

Excellent work! Good luck on filling that last hole.

Very nice set. I like the look of a lot of them and am happy to see you have a range of lightly toned to blast white. I started working on a Peace set a number of years ago and eventually gave up because I was having difficulty finding MS pieces at reasonable prices.

I agree. It feels oddly unsatisfying to me when an album for a raw set has holes "filled" by slabbed coins. Must be the Felix Unger in me.

  • Thanks for all the comments everyone. It's been a lot of fun putting this together and I've learned a lot about grading Peace dollars in the process.

I'll crack the slabs eventually because I agree they'd look nicer in the book. Just taking my time about it image

Mostly I find the really high grade blast-white ones boring - to me the ones with a little wear or SLIGHT tonight are far more interesting - many of these have a slight golden hue to the reverse which looks pretty cool image
