<< <i>That August 28 event sounds more like a big pep rally for right-wingers, facists, racists and folks who are unhappy about the president bearing dark skin to vent their frustrations and defile the legacy of a landmark civil rights event that happened on the same day decades ago.

Interesting comment. That one would spew such a toxic and vindictive eruption of political invective is most inappropriate on this forum, especially if one does not know what he's talking about. >>

We really enjoyed Mount Vernon (two years ago, when the kids were 9 and 6). The museum has recently been redone and is fabulous.

The various military service bands have series of free concerts all summer long (or at least they use to).

We spent many a summer evening listening to one or another of the bands.

Yesterday, we had a great tour of the Pentagon thanks to crypto79. We went to areas that tourists never go to all the while getting a historical commentary. Also, he drove us to the Marine Corps Memorial, Arlington, and a drive back through DC. In the morning my family saw the Air and Space and American History museums. This morning we are off to the Archives, Ford Theatre, and National Cathedral.

If the celebrations in DC feature speeches honoring our vets and the end of the combat mission in Iraq, I will be impressed. If it devolves into what WTCG said, then I won't. We'll have to see.

Way cool of Crypto79 to do that for a forum member!! I would say he is a "Great American" but since Sean Hannity kind of coined the phrase, somone may think I was a a "right-wing, facist, racist" for listening to Hannity. image

Enjoy your vacation. I would not miss Mt Vernon for anything. Also, To view the Declaration of Independance and Constitution would be life changing, and like Longacre, I would well up and probably weep.

At this point, 8/27, I'd glady trade an SVDB for round trip airfare and a hotel in DC for 8-28. My planning sucks.

    Edited to add:
the event/rally/celebration on 8/28 in DC will be aired live on facebook on " you know who's " page........

It feels like we walked 10 miles: Archives, Museum of Art, Smithsonian, American History (the star spangled banner flag is huge, 30X40 feet and I totally forgot the coin display-I don't know how that happened-four kids(?)), a walk down the mall past the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial and on to the Lincoln Memorial where we saw the rehearsal for the 8-28 Rally led by Dr. Alveda King-niece of MLK, Viet Nam Memorial, lunch @ the Reagan Center, Ford's Theatre and the house where Lincoln died and then on to Lalibela's (Ethiopian food).

I still can't believe I missed the coin exhibit.

You might have seen my Mom. She works at the A&S information desk on Fridays.

Her favorite thing is when the high school kids ask her where the "Mall" is, and are disappointed when she tells them it's the big green stretch of lawn jut outside the museum doors.

I got up at 4am, taxi to the Lincoln Memorial by 5am to get a place for my family that's sleeping in from yesterday's activities. I get to the Memorial....there's 100,000 there already! I situate myself halfway down the the reflecting pond on the south and shady side. It's still dark, I take pictures of the the Lincoln and Washington monuments before daybreak. There's spontaneous songs of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, Amazing Grace, Waves, U S A, and others. My family and friends arrive. The event starts and servicemen and women are honored, God and Country is honored, America is honored. NO POLITICS WHATSOEVER! It was multiracial, multicultural and multi religion. It was about the honor of man via God. It was not some "right-winged racist, fascist group hating a dark-skinned president" as a forum member here tried to disparage. This was true Americanism from our foundings to MLK.

My most chilling moment was when a video of MLK was played while he was speaking 47 years ago at the same place....you can hear his echo through the speakers. This was no hijack, this was in honor. His niece, Dr. Alveda King was there to promote speakers, music and clergy and the event overall.

Three awards of "merit" were presented to three American's for Faith, Hope and Charity.

This was a three hour event that was held in hot, humid, DC weather. No body left, everyone endured and enjoyed. We waved at news helicopters that were there to record the crowd. A couple of "media" estimates were 500,000! From what I saw, there were people as far as the Washington Monument watching the event.

I walked back to my hotel (I had 2 hotels in differnet areas due to the demand of the 8-28 rally) and saw another rally in contrast (Chinatown) that shocked me as I walked by. It was hard-core megaphone in-your-face hate-rap about religion. A second rally was another block down on 6th street. I saw political signs that said the people I saw in the morning were racists and not equal to MLK.

The rally I attended was peaceful, loving and full of hope, non-political and the one I stumbled across what full of hate and racist. JMO.

Tonight I will take my family on a Potomac cruise at dusk to Alexandria and back up at night to Georgetown.

Hey Chang, it looks like your still carrying pictures of Chairman Mao and giving your blessing on the 40 million he condemned to death . Now your even carrying water for the current socialist regime that is disgracing the world by pushing a system that brings nothing but decay and robs the rights of an individual of all liberty and highly compromises the morality of its people. Haven't you had enough of hate mongering and despotism.

I for one am extremely glad to be an American and for the efforts that Glenn Beck and many others went to, to provide a celebration of liberty and a call to return to GOD.

Excuse me, but did you just participate in hate mongering with your first two sentences and then complain about the practice of hate mongering with your third?

Nobody left GOD. Why are people blathering on about needing to return to GOD? Do you think that GOD might appreciate a system that allows the uninsured to get insurance? Do you think GOD might appreciate a system that allows those unemployed through no fault of their own the chance to receive benefits so that they can feed their families? Do you think GOD might appreciate a system that tries to actually reform the disastrous lack of financial oversight that led to the recession? GOD is a liberal. Wow, I spend the day at a coin show and it gets to this point!

Before you start getting all holy and righteous and all and attempt to link Mao to this tread you should know the facts...

    Wrong country, pal... Try again.

I am not from the country of Mao. I do have ancestry that traces back there and I have relatives who fought against his revolution and were imprisoned and/or died to stop communism from taking hold there. I still have some extended family members who are in exile around Asia because of that.

At least know the facts before making accusations you cannot back up.

I have watched some of the media coverage, they seem to be at a loss as how to characterize this event. There wasn't anything controversial other than what the pundits could gin up. They were baffled that so many would show up from around the country without a political agenda.

Make sure that you return to the Lincoln monument, and take the elevator to see the statue with your family. The view is magnificent, and the words of Lincoln's speeches are truly inspirational.

Then, after learning more about Lincoln, be sure you take your family to Ford's Theater. You can teach your children that John Wilkes Booth was a religious man. He killed one of our greatest presidents, claiming that he was acting as "God's instrument". Booth also claimed that his actions were based upon his "love for liberty".

  • After watching both rallies on CSPAN the democrats won the award for vindictive rhetoric and clearly left Beck’s speakers in the dust when it came to hate mongering. Beck’s speakers did mostly stay away from politics as advertised and paid homage to those who deserve it, our military and God. Rev. Al’s speakers utilized the same stories and scare tactics the democrats have been using for the past few months, republicans/tea baggers are racists, haters, etc..

If you get a chance to watch the taped rallies, judge for yourself. Listen to the SEIU union speaker. He was a real gem; they should have been embarrassed to let some of their speakers on a stage. Not that it matters, but I am a lifelong registered democrat.
