I guess some people are not big enough to admit when they are wrong or apologize for “stereo – typing” a group of people just because they have a different view point.
Renman95, if you have time, the BEP has a good tour watching them make paper money and if you have any friends in the military, the Washington Navy Yard has a nice museum on post but you need someone with an ID to get on.
Agree! The BEP has a very cool tour. It's about a block from the Washington Monument and right next to the Holocaust Museum. Near the end of the BEP tour, look for a sign on the wall that reads "I just printed more money in 5 minutes than I make in a lifetime" !
PCGS Currency: HOF 2013, Best Low Ball Set 2009-2014, 2016, 2018. Appreciation Award 2015, Best Showcase 2018, Numerous others.
I almost passed this one by. Well, before it goes poof, here's my two cents. I really enjoy the Natural History and Air and Space Museums. Takes me back to when I was a kid and my uncle would take me there. The foot traffic inside is terrible these days inside these buildings. Was there this summer to take my step daughter. I felt like I was at soccer match when viewing the hope diamond (crushed). I'd have to say the best time to visit is in the winter nowadays. The outdoor stuff isn't so bad, just plan careful so you are not walking back and forth.

Yes they do! I went there when I was a kid about 20 years ago. I don't remember much about the tour except the big stacks of uncut sheets of money!
I go to northern VA a couple times a year to visit family. Over the years I've probably been to almost all the monuments, museums, buildings, etc. in DC. I think my favorite places to visit up there were Mt. Vernon and Arlington National Cemetary, which by the way neither are in DC.

and the sign near the sales counter: "no free samples"
I'm leaving DC today. Thanks for all the suggestions. We did quite a bit. I could come back for a week and still not make a dent. Great fun and experience.
I couldn't make the BEP or coin exhibit. The only numismatic event was an interesting conversation with crypto79 about his CC Trade Dollars. Visit his site if you get a chance. And thanks again for the Pentagon tour et.al.
Paypal does not accept food stamps, but you can use them to buy alcohol and gamble in California, so maybe they will be able to buy coins with them soon
The statement is simply false. First, the program no longer uses "stamps". Participants now receive a debit card. The card can only be used to purchase certain edible foods, and it can only be used at certain stores. It cannot be used for purchasing alcohol or for gambling. When a participant checks out at a participating store, there are two totals generated: the amounts that are covered by the program, and the amounts that must be separately paid with cash. Any alcohol, or non-edible items, cannot be purchased with the debit card.

MM when I was a kid in the early seventies they use to have a sign under a camera in the DC BEP (overlooking one of the printing presses on the tour), "In God We Trust... All Others We Watch Very Closely". I was there last year and didn't recall seeing it then. Used to get a chuckle out of that.

The original response about food stamps was intended as a joke and a follow-up to an earlier response. Yes I know they are no longer issued as “food stamps”, now they are Access cards or debit cards. (Wouldn’t want to embarrass the user when they buy a nicer cut of meat than you do) However, they are still commonly referred to as food stamps. If you wish to follow these links, you can read about the reporter for the LA times who identified the cards are being used in casinos. The story is reported in Fox news so some readers may not believe it. The other link discusses general fraud and yes it is all fraud using the program to gamble or buy booze, but it does happen.
I would have sent you a PM with this data so as not to put more non coin related discussion in this thread but you do not have your PM on.

If you read the links that you provided, and you research this issue, you will see that the fraudulent activity occurred with a program called CalWORKS, which is a state-run welfare program. It is not the same program that is called Food Stamps (officially named SNAP). The program called "Food Stamps" is a federal program that is strict about not providing cash to recipients. The federal food stamps benefit cannot be used for gambling or for purchasing other items that are not edible. It's unfortunate that your Governor is doing a poor job running California's programs and you have this fraudulent activity. It's also unfortunate that Fox news inaccurately described the program as the federal food stamps program, which is not involved in the fraud that you described.

Are you saying that there is NO fraud within theFederal Food Stamp Program? Get a life! So it is the Govenors fault, at least you didn't blame Bush for this one.
Sorry the OP didn't have time for the tour at the BEP, I think his family would have enjoyed it.

it sounds like Washington DC has so many cool places, a couple of weeks could be spent there
