Secure Plus - Are they the REAL grades?

If you have an MS-68 that you submit under Secure Plus, will it come back at the REAL grade or is it guaranteed to continue to live as an MS-68? If the coin was somehow overgraded in the past, will it retain it's MS-68 grading or will it receive it's true grade of MS-67, MS-67+, etc.?

or worded differently... Is there anyway an MS-67 coin, in an MS-68 PCGS standard holder, can become an overgraded MS-68 in a Secure Plus holder?

  • Good question! My guess is that if the coin is overgraded they would downgrade it and make the submitter whole.

The way I understand it is that secure plus insures that the coin will never be doctored. I suppose you could still resubmit a coin for a grade review.

I guess that's been my one point of contention with PCGS... if a coin enters PCGS to be graded (under grade review, or any other service) and the coin is determined to be overgraded, PCGS should slab the coin in the properly graded slab and make the owner financially whole. Why would PCGS want ANY coin to be overgraded in one of their slabs?

I thought that's what was happening now.

    The REAL grade?

    Grades are opinions...nothing more.

The closest thing to a "REAL grade" is whatever the buyer believes.

As curly pointed out, secure plus insures that the coin will never be doctored. You can still resubmit a coin for a grade review.

    I'm with MidLifeCrisis: "Real grade"?

that's like saying, "what's the REAL movie review?" "what's the REAL wine rating?" "what's the REAL best restaurant in town?" "who's the REAL best actor"

all are simply the opinions of specific humans at a certain point in time. And they can change later.

Assuming that MS67 was the real grade when the coin was first viewed. It's also possible that the next time it is looked at they can make the same choice they did the first time and still leave it in the 68 holder. Are the "secure plus" pockets deep enough to undo every potentially overgraded coin in the market today if sent in, including all MS/PF type coins, dated 19th and 20th cent. set REG series, generic gold (esp. 65-66 Saints), patterns, proof gold, commems, Morgans, full strikes (FB, FBL, FH), 6 figure and up rarities, etc.?

secure plus insures that the coin will never be doctored.

not an accurate statement at all.

Maybe not, but I think that's at least what Secure Plus was designed to do. (Although it's probably "ensures" instead of "insures"...)

Secure Plus was not designed to be the final answer for the grade of a coin.

It's not the final say on grade or doctoring, merely a 2nd opinon rendered after the first one. It can certainly change on a 3rd review.

    Keets is right.

the strongest statement one can accurately make is that "IF the secure plus coin is cracked out and doctored, and IF the coin is then submitted for secure plus, THEN PCGS would notice."

it's still not real clear what happens then. we assume they bag the coin (no "genuine" holdered secure plus coins) but what else besides returning it. do they "out" the culprit?

both are correct, the coin upon regrade both in the past and now could down grade. Regardless of service used. >>

let's not forget on top of all the correct above - the coin may be deemed ungradeable , and go into a genuine only ; or even a body bag .

I would imagine that would be an extremely rare occurrence.
