Another gold Columbian Expo rarity finds a home

tmot99tmot99 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭
I received a call from a suburban Chicago dealer that I know. He has been offered an extremely rare Columbian Expo gold medal for a shooting contest and wanted to know if I was interested. I thought this was a silly question. OF COURSE I AM!!!! Anyway, I happen to know that this medal is not unique as I actually know someone else who has one. I do not know if the other one has the original presentation case with it or not, but mine sure does.

Here it is, to be listed as PRH-1 in my new book (PRH=Pins, Ribbons, and Hanging Medals).

So how big is this medal? Hard to tell from the photos.

Just curious if they had snap type buttons like on the case in 1893 image

Snaps were invented in the 1850's and pretty much perfected by the 1890's. (maybe with the exception of using stainless steel)

Thanks for that little bit of research! I always wonder if something is actually an original case and hadn't thought of the snap being an authenticity killer. This at least lends itself to believability that this is authentic.

The other interesting thing about this medal is that it appears to be constructed rather than minted. The landing scene is actually a cutout and attached onto a polished plate. On the reverse, the rifle is also a cutout piece attached to the polished plate.
