I imagine this is about the worst thing that could happen to baseball cards at this moment.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
I just think its bad for baseball - he was a name that non-fans knew and could have maintained their interest with a continued strong rookie year. Some will gloat with 'I told you so's', but I don't see what's so great about a young uber-talent getting hurt.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
The sad thing is he might never do anything at the MLB level again. I know TJ surgery has come a long way but you never know. This is the reason you never take a gamble (cards wise) on pitchers. Just to many reasons for them to flame out.
It's going to be a Y2K panic now for some people. Those who sold early are no happy no doubt. I imagine you can buy some cheap in the next few days and hope for the best.
<< <i>I imagine this is about the worst thing that could happen to baseball cards at this moment. >>
I think that is only if you invested in his cards. This is bad news for the Nationals though. >>
Have you seen the interest in 2010 baseball cards? All products have been selling out months in advance because of the Stras rc. Products that are not completely out yet. Someone like just Dave and Adams took a big hit, the local hobby shop and anyone that preordered boxes.

And using collector mentality.....onto the Jason Heyward bridge?

<< <i>Topps should do a dual Tommy John/Strasburg card and maybe do the same for other TJ surgeries.

Except for the ligament part, I wrote the same thing not to long ago. Maybe Tommy John can be inducted into the HOF as a contributor for lending his name to the surgery since he didn't make it as a player?

18 month rehab is only the start. It will probably take another 12 months just to find out what level he can pitch at. Kerry Wood was never the same after TJ surgery.

It's a shame he got hurt.....you hate to see any prospect have to have surgery....even veterans that go down....I remember years ago when the Indians signed Wayne Garland....now there's a name from the past...he had arm problems and was never the same. Probably why they don't sign anyone anymore....or at least part of the reason.
Bryce Harper now becomes THE card to get in the 2010 Bowman. Prices were super inflated anyway for that product with some online retailers gouging at near $200 per hobby box. The only people hurt by this news, other than Strasburg and the Nationals of course, is the people who tried to get way too much for their Strasburg cards and now will have to HOPE to get half of what was probably offered to them just a month ago.
The good news is that those collectors who wanted a SS card for their collection can now afford it. 12-18 months is a long time, but it is evident that he wont be pitching in the majors again until 2012.
Been told since I started collecting that collecting pitchers with the hopes of reselling them is the cardinal mistake, this does nothing to disprove that theory.
So, didn't some card of his sell for like 17-25K a while back? What's it worth today? $3 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly my thoughts. I thought the people were morons who paid that money and now it's confirmed. I am sorry this happened to whoever you are who paid that silly money for a rookie's cardboard. Better luck with your next gamble... or maybe just go to Vegas with your money!?

I beg to differ. Aroldis Chapman is a beast and has been showing it in the minors. 122 Ks in 96 innings. Fastball in the 99-102 range. Just for snorts and giggles, he has a .400 batting average. If he was 24 instead of 22, he would be in the majors already.
Much less worrries. A can't miss in the NFL....is usually at the min. going to be a mega star from his college and eventually have his jersey retired. et, al.
Plus....we could care less how many steroids or whatever you are using. (Am I allowed to say that...or is it suppose to be unspoken?)
And it is the biggest and fastest growing American sport. (Not counting sports with very few events...like NASCAR or Horse Racing).
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
I think football is way more of a crapshoot - I'll pass. Save a few rare folks at each position, the turnover rate of 'elite' is high. QB is about the only position where a guy can stay elite for a long time (and maybe wr if they always have a solid QB), but by the time you know a QB is good the prices are sky high.
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
I think Dibble is pretty spot on. Not to the point of overusing him...al la Dwight Gooden, but it really donesn't make sense to me to have it be a question.
With modern tech and all a doctor should be able to tell you, you can pitch, you can pitch a couple innings, you can not pitch...I would imagine?
Dibble played AAA here with Eric Davis. He was a pretty big prospect at one time, but ended up being so-so. (Which means you are better then 1000s...but still..)
I really miss not having a AAA here, and was not smart enough all those years to take advantage of it ($ wise).

In the long run, possibly. Right now, outside of baseball fans, Chapman is a rather obscure name. Harper has the name and news stories behind it to go along with it. From a standpoint of value, Harper will keep Bowman afloat until the other rookies blossom. As a Reds fan, I am well aware of Chapman, the reason he isnt in the majors is not because of his age, but because his command right now is sub-par (not my viewpoint, just those of the Reds organization). Harper's card, being an insert, is also more difficult to obtain. Chapman may, in the long run, be the better player and possibly even more valuable, but for now, most collectors would rather have a Harper than a Chapman.

this represents a turning point for PSA and other TPG's as the wave of Strasburg subs turn to dust in the postman's satchel.

You will be ok there I think - lots of new prospects/autos coming out that should be solid (Sano, Chapman, Alonzo, Wallace, etc).

It is almost a guaranteed certainty that I will pull a Strasburg auto #'d to 25 or less.

A lot of folks have pointed out that his mechanics were going to be a problem before he made his debut.
