<< <i>Bryce Harper now becomes THE card to get in the 2010 Bowman. >>

I beg to differ. Aroldis Chapman is a beast and has been showing it in the minors. 122 Ks in 96 innings. Fastball in the 99-102 range. Just for snorts and giggles, he has a .400 batting average. If he was 24 instead of 22, he would be in the majors already. >>

In the long run, possibly. Right now, outside of baseball fans, Chapman is a rather obscure name. Harper has the name and news stories behind it to go along with it. From a standpoint of value, Harper will keep Bowman afloat until the other rookies blossom. As a Reds fan, I am well aware of Chapman, the reason he isnt in the majors is not because of his age, but because his command right now is sub-par (not my viewpoint, just those of the Reds organization). Harper's card, being an insert, is also more difficult to obtain. Chapman may, in the long run, be the better player and possibly even more valuable, but for now, most collectors would rather have a Harper than a Chapman. >>

I will take the 17 year old phenom who could probably hold his own in AA vs the '22' year old pitcher with, command issues as well. I think harper's first bowman auto will have some insane prices - perhaps equal to Stras?
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.
  • Harper is a complete douche. Hope he turns into a bust just because of his attitude.

Sorry for Strasburg but happy once again that I only collect vintage. I don't think this news will impact the value of my Clemente's or Mantle's and if Nolan Ryan throws out his elbow soft tossing to his grandkids, it won't impact his cards either.

He is a 17 year old thrown into national spotlight at the age of 14/15 and has been told how great he is from everyone. What 17 year old isn't a douche, especially given those circumstances? Give him a few years to see if he keeps down that path or not. He doesn't seem like a troubled kid (no baby's mama's, not prone to finding trouble, getting violent, etc), and that is a good start.

Back to Strasburg and who ever bought that card for 15k or whatever it was.

Can you imagine the feeling that guy has in his belly?

    Steve
    Good for you.

Probably like he lost a penny - I don't think the buyer would sweat losing $15K.

Correct. He is likely wondering right now should I replace the white shag carpet with baige.

Anyone that would pay that money, can likely afford to throw it away.

    Somewhere Dpeck is smiling...................

No I don't think this is funny at all. I feel bad for the young guy. His cards may have been bid up to laughable prices and were easy to predict a down fall but he was the shot in the arm the baseball card industry needed. I go to a card shop Orlando Sports Cards to pick up card savers and other supplies and during Strasburg mania his sales were really doing well. His store is in a beat up shopping center on the very outskirts of Orlando as you head to Kissimmee and you could tell he was pumped that product was moving. As I said in another thread I even bought some packs of Bowman and Allen & Ginter for the heck of it and I don't have any real interest in modern baseball cards so that tells you a ton of product was moving at good prices.

I find it funny that the Beckett guy says his cards will hold up becuase they sold for a lot before he went pro. Sorry but now he is like tainted merchandise that will have to prove him self. His cards will plummet and then will hold up a bit is what I would bet, and then as time goes on collectors will grow impatient and a new hot prospect will arise causing him to be pushed to the sides and fall further. I think a good time to buy his cards would be about four months before he comes back. I would suspect you can buy his cards at least down 85% to 90% or more from the peak and at that time you may want to put a toe in the water.

I hope his is able to come back and do some damage. I enjoyed watching him. I did pull the Bowman Chrome in the few packs I bought of the Cuban pitcher for the Reds so hopefully he will do well.

2010 Bowman Expectations card, I had 3 of them. First one I sold for $35 right before his first injury. Second one I sold for $23. The auction ended the day of his 1st game back. Third one ended the day after his last start. No bids at a $4.99 starting price.

When 2010 Bowman were first released and the Strasburg card hype started, I mentioned the same thing happens every year with Bowman baseball, and football to some extent. The product is hot for a while because of one, sometimes 2, players. In the end the best cards are always from players with limited hype when the product was released.

2010 Bowman is full of really young top prospects like Heyward, Chapman, Harper, Donovan Tate and Dustin Ackley. Who will be the one that becomes the long time superstar?

    That is interesting to know.

I am looking at the card I pulled, Aroldis Chapman Bowman Chrome.

I remember when the news hit when he signed. This guy throws gas but I guess is wild. Maybe if he gets a littler better command of his pitches he will make it. When a pitcher has hard stuff but is a little wild batters are more ansty just like Randy Johnson.

I agree with you that Bryce Harper has a little bit of an attitude and I do think it is impossible for a 17 year old to not withh is talent and hype; but hopefully he will make an impact and pick up the slack where Strasburg left off.

I was really excited to see baseball cards get hot and with the reduction of brands that is a more healthy supply stream and is good for the cards.

I doubt we will ever see a time again where kids like when I was growing up spent every penny they had on cards because the pack prices have turned it into an adult hobby but young stars that are like lottery tickets drive the industry so I am hopefull some of the names you mentioned help out.
  • Chapman is a lot like Randy Johnson. He's really tall and lanky. Throws really friggin hard but is a little wild right now.

I still think Dustin Ackley will be one of the overlooked stars from 2010 Bowman. This is his 1st season in pro ball and already at AAA. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets called up in the next week or 2 just to see what he can do. Since the Mariners were officially eliminated from playoff contention about a month ago, I can't believe he hasn't been called up yet.

EDIT: Ackley may not be getting called up this year. His contract gives him a bonus if he makes the bigs this year.

Your last statement is what is messed up with pro sports.

Becuase of a few bucks in the terms of MLB money, they don't bring a guy up to get him some big league experience. It would be wise to get the jitters out and get him used to the big crowds and just the overall experience of the Big Show. I bet his bonus is crumbs compared to a Manny Ramirez or David Ortiz or the long list of juice heads that are dying on the vine now.
