Heading to the Coin Shop this weekend to drop off my coins...

Since I really have no idea what Im doing. I recently went into a local shop back where I grew up, to find out one of my high school teachers owned it. I purchased some Silver JM Bars, and we got to talking. Ive been in there a few times, and he has an older fellow who goes through every coin that comes in the shop. He doesnt work there... just does it for fun. He offered to go through my entire collection for me, and help me figure out where to go from here. I made a "basic" list. I didnt go through mint marks, or anything like that... but a general list of what I have to help him get started. Thought I would post it here for you guys to see, and if there is something major (other then the obvious 1909 S VDB, 1916 D Merc, Etc) I should look through "just in case" you might be able to toss it out there for me. After you guys see my list, youll understand WHY im doing this. Im not leaving the hobby, just looking to get rid of any "junk" (which is probably most of it) and move forward with something more focused.

  • mercy, that is quite a menagerie you have there.

I say you will emerge on the other side of your sell-off and be much better off. I think you will find that your thought, planning, patience, and aim will have improved dramatically since you initially began your collecting.

best of luck in your sell-off.

what do you think will be your focus after all this housecleaning is complete?
  • Im not sure where my focus would be. Probably in gold, but I have a LOT to learn.

That is a long list, but cannot tell much without more detail.... Good luck, Cheers, RickO

You are not alone in your accumulation. A lot of people have an array of coins such as this...but sorry to say not too much demand exists for most of this, and you may be unable to sell this off for anything dollarwise that will make you think "wow I got a good deal here".

A lot of B&M coin shops have items like this in inventory....and no doubt will still have it in inventory in a year...or three....or ten.....

If the silver coins are just average circulated grade...and you really want them gone, maybe just a sale to a bullion dealer at X time face may be your only sale.

How old are you? Any kids....grandchildren? A lot of YNs would delight in a gift of this some of this material...and very well set them on a good collecting path as they grow into it.

Id be keeping anything slabbed. Id probably keep the morgan and peace dollars.

Focus is wonderful. A concentration in ONE series, along with the literature that supports it.....can satisfy your collecting passions way more than any hodgepodge of "stuff".

Good Luck.......I hope you find a happy way to enjoy coins once more

PS If you can provide a few pictures of the (fake?) gold maybe we can make a determination on that.

keep us posted on how ya make out with it image best wishes
  • Yeah,

Im not taking it there to sell it... he just told me if I gave him some time, he would go through it all and give me an idea of what all the heck I even have. Not worried about value, or money I can get for it. To me its just a "liability" of having all of it laying around with no clue really what I even have. Will post pics of the 2 gold coins... give me 10-15 min. (I will create a new thread)
