Not quite sure? Guy is saying it is trimmed. It doesnt look trimmed to me...it is the exact same size as other Bowmans...please tell me what i am missing here>?
No...I told him to send the card back...but now I am asking...is the card basically worthless? Does it hold no value unless I can get Mr. Mays to sign it?
PSA supposedly determined that the raw Mays was trimmed, but what does everyone think about this card? I refrained from bidding on it because the top of the card was noticably smaller than the bottom.
<< <i>The buyer has every right to expect a refund assuming he is being truthful. Personally I would not purchase such a card raw from someone who sells graded cards. The card coming back EOT brings suspicion upon such a seller. >>
I totally disagree. Just because a grading company says its trimmed, it doesnt mean it is. Its just an opinion with no proof. You can crack out a PSA card, send it to PSA and it comes back trimmed. Silliness of grading companies. If the buyer wanted a graded card, then he should buy graded.

Since we are talking eBay and since it is in the 45-day window...the buyer should absolutely get a refund. It is not even something the seller could fight. Plus after bringing it to the board...it would only hurt the seller more not to do such.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
To me on that '55 Mays posted, the bottom edge looks definitely trimmed when looking at the card horizontally. There's a waviness to that edge. With that red frame around it, assuming it's set for the correct size of the card, it's short t-b too. Bowmans are all over the place as far as sizing goes, but this one looks cut to me.
I'd refund the buyer, move on, and send the card in for grading myself to be sure of the EOT designation. Or use it for an autograph, as the OP said he would.

This card is fine. Appears full size. Looks like a nice 8 to me.
<< <i>Why didn't you send this card in for grading before listing it on ebay? Did that question ever get answered? >>
I just never did. I wanted to conduct my own little "experiment", as sometimes I see raw cards bring more than their graded counterparts (ie, Waverly, Great Lakes Auction House). I bought the card around 8 months ago from a seller who has never sold me "trimmed" cards before, so I had no reason to believe that was trimmed. I was toying with the idea of getting a shadow box and just putting it in it (I have another display piece that has 3 1953 Topps cards as well as the wrapper from the set) along with a couple other Mays cards, but after seeing how much that Mantle brought in the SGC 'A' case, I have decided that is the route I wish to take.....
I don't know much about the 55 bowman series, but I agree a refund is in order. I then would submit the card myself to PSA and see what happens.
I remember an 1986 Jordan RC that was deemed EOT and it now resides in a PSA 9 NQ holder (if they can screw up on a modern card it can happen to an older card too). Myself I have had a couple cards come back EOT or minsiz that were sent back to PSA only to be holdered on the 2nd or 3rd time around. I have also had a few EOT from PSA that upon closer inspection I realized yes trimmed all the way. anybody want to buy a really nice trimmed 73 Schmidt rookie (ouch).
as others have said the 55 bowman series was all over the place (quality control in 55) the scan does look funny but in my opinion so does the scan of the PSA 8 Mays. JMHO
All grading companies screw up not saying this is the case with the 55 Mays, because to detect a really good trim job you need the card in hand to inspect it, but it is possible.

<< <i>The other thing that Jeff's scans CLEARLY show is that the front of the card is larger than the back of the card.
Weird isn't it?

The card is an obvious trim job.
Cards from that era came in various sizes.
Over sized examples were trimmed in order to make them appear
in a nicer way. The right side (if looking at the front of the card) is not only wavy but ends with a bat ear.
Your buyer appears to be a decent ebayer and IMO is not trying to pull anything.
He communicated his findings to you, and he still had and has time in his 45 day window to file a snad.
That should tell you that he is sincere. Is 147.00 really worth your reputation here? Let alone on Ebay?
Just trying to give you some advice here.
Steve
In it's raw state, yeah it's basically worthless. It could be used as a filler.
If it were mine I'd have PSA or SGC slab it as authentic and if I ever sold it I'd state why
it's in an authentic holder.
Your idea of using it to have Willie sign it is also a good one.
I'd ask around about which way would make the card more valuable.
(Probably the signature card) But I'm not really into sigs.
Bottom line is a simple one, someone sold you this card, and they either knew it was bad or didn't.
At this point in time it really does not matter, I have no idea how much you have into it and that too should not matter.
You win some, you lose some.
You have it now, eat the loss and move on. I'm sure 150.00 isn't the end of the world for you.

If anything it is slightly OC T/B.

Brought almost $400 on Ebay!! That is PSA 6-7 range for a supposedly "trimmed" card....

<< <i>Hey Steve. I think I am gonna have SGC grade it as authentic....check out this 1959 Mickey Mantle
Brought almost $400 on Ebay!! That is PSA 6-7 range for a supposedly "trimmed" card....
I wonder what fool bought that? Usually A graded cards are lucky to get half that price.

Unfortunately, the fool will be the person who unknowingly buys the card raw once it is cracked out of the holder.
But that too was my guess, it was bought so it could be resold as NM/MNT raw.

<< <i>It's happened to me as well. And it is very possible, but in the buyers situation he can't

I must be missing something here but if this card was sharp and awesome looking
shouldn't it have been graded before selling it? I mean a 55 Bowman Mays graded
is worth much more than a raw example, no? Especially if it was possible it could come back as an 8.
Or what that a rhetorical question?
