anyway... I would think Rick would have an idea... I do not know the details but I have heard of some outfit in either Tx or your state that buys big lots of lincolns... sorry I can't be more helpful than that... not a copper guy image

I'd try the BST as these can be listed with just a description.

BST should work best, I can't imagine that dealers will buy bulk lots like that for more than dimes on the dollar.

How quickly are you looking to sell, and are you looking to sell it all as one lot?

there was a thread about this type of material Link to thread

bottom line is, you can sell it fast in one piece for a deep (maybe very deep) discount from "what it's worth", or you can break it up and "part it out" for values closer to "what it's worth", at the tradeoff of a lot of time and work, not to mention possibly lots of cost in things like listing and final value fees and postage.

No one in their right mind will pay "what it's worth". A collector of circ Lincolns don't want it and can't afford it, and a dealer needs lots of room to eke out a profit.

    Howd you get em?

As a retired dealer I can tell you that it often takes years for a full time dealer with a store to sell this type of material. Key dates, like the 1909-S-VDB, 1914-D and the 1931-S can sell quickly if they are priced correctly. The common dates usually sell at a snail’s pace.

As such you can expect to get heavily discounted prices for the common below the listings in retail catalogs and even the Gray Sheet. Many of the prices on the Gray Sheet for circulated modern coins like this are too high IMO.

If you well everything all at once you will probably get less. If you sell it slowly over in smaller lots you might get more, and it will probably try your patience. This is one of the reasons why I have always avoided becoming a hoarder for anything except junk silver, which is not really numismatic.

You might try Littleton if they're all no problem. I've heard two stories on them, one is that they send back anything with even a minor flaw, and two they'll send back at least half of what you send, even if it's perfect, just so they can brag about how picky they are. Send them a package and let us know. They definitely move a lot of volume of this kind of stuff. Let us know what you decide and some of us might follow your lead. image

A local dealer in my area, whom I respect, won't have anything to do with Littleton's buying practices. Not his words, but the gist of his opinion is that they are in the cherry-picking business and that places a damper on the supposed "high prices" they advertise that they will pay.

I would buy as many Wayte Raymond albums as you can find....and plug in as many coins as you can iinto them.

Then, as much as you dont like it.....put them on ebay with no reserve. You may be very surprised.
  • If Littleton does pay high prices for what they pick, then why not let them have first dibs? Yes, you'll still have to sell half of the lot, but the other half will have been bought at a high price.

That sounds like the best plan! If you do this and price at say half of full retail (or below sheet) for everything but the keys (which you can probably sell for near retail), you'll get people flocking to your table.

Honestly, if I had several thousand bucks lying around I'd consider making you an offer.

I too have the same "hoard" of thousands of Wheat cents-problem when it comes to Lincolns. The BST in my experience is crap!. I had a roll of 1909 and 1909 VDB cents grading VG+ and couldn't sell, asking between CDN bid & ask pricing. I think I sold a single coin of each to one member.

Bill's advice seems sound to me and will take a lot of patience but may provide the highest return.

The with that plan is that you are on the hook for the postage to send it to them and on the hook to have it sent back to you. If they reject enough stuff, you could end up worse off than you were before you started this experiment. image
