The dark stuff on the right side of Liberty's cheek makes me hesitant to step out with a firm grade guess.

From the images, the coin does look like it has been cleaned...and cleaned quite well (read: cleaned a lot). As far as a technical grade, the coin is an AU. From the images there appears to be wear in the fields which is disrupting the surface enough that "halos" are evident around the devices.
"They" may have told you the coin has not been cleaned, but "they" may actually not know any better. Are "they" a dealer? If so, about how much did you pay for the coin? The reason I ask is that the coin has the look of a "choice BU" from one of the Coin World "major, multi-page" advertisers that offer coins to the public at "below wholesale" prices.

Well...then it certainly didn't come from one of those multi-page CW dealers.
I will go out on a limb (since the images are not spectacular) and recommend that you return the coin (if possible) and look for a PCGS/NGC/ANACS certified 96-O in AU. Sounds like you paid a fair price for an AU, but I am afraid the coin you received is not original. I imagine it is a coin that somebody cleaned in an attempt to pass a high-end AU off as an MS coin.
At least you did not pay MS money for the coin!
