1885 $5 Gold Liberty Real or fake?

Hello, 1st time on the coin section. Always around the corner talking cardboard. While getting the bosses office painted, found this in a box of junk. He doesn't collect. Real? If so, should I get it graded for him? Condition looks good. If real, about a $350 coin? Thanks.

  • Real. Polished?
  • Unsure if it's polished. I'll google how to detect that. I assume that will hurt the value. Thanks for your reply.

It was probably a gift, like for 20 years service. Not worth submitting, as it was likely ex-jewlery.

Looks genuine to me but it's been polished heavily and most likely from jewelry usage. image

It's tough to tell from images, but the piece looks genuine and appears to have been polished. If so, it is not worth the expense to have certified, but is still worth at least its bullion value. At this time that value is about $300.

I would vote counterfeit. The surfaces don't have the right luster; some of the stars appear to be misshapen, and there seems to be roughness on the neck.

It's hard to tell about the reverse because the picture was shot at an angle. It's always better to shoot pictures straight down for authentication work like this
