Anyone every hear of Google Goggles?

Google Goggles is an application that currently runs on Android Smart Phones (soon to be ported to iPhones and iPad). You basically hold up your phone to an object (say a rare painting) and it tells you the name of the painting, who painted it, when, etc. You hold up the phone to a building of some importance and it does the same with that. Google is currently working on the ability to hold it up to a persons face and it will scan Facebook for that face and tell you who that person is.

Now stay with me. Why couldn't that be adapted for coins? Hold it up to a coin, it id's it and takes you to the CoinFacts web page for that coin. It then attempts to determine a rough grade based on PhotoGrade. Maybe it won't say VF 30, but it could say, VF, or XF. Probably couldn't discern above MS63. It also could pull up the pop report and auction price history. Maybe it could even id that exact coin if it is encapsulated and give you the provenance (using the bar code).

Wouldn't that be a great app for coins? You're at a show, there is a raw coin you are interested in, it id's it, grades it, and pulls all all the facts and price history. Or it is encapsulated and you want to know the history of that coin.

PCGS please feel free to use this idea. This could be the real Big One.

I like the idea, especially to ID a coin and pull up redbook-type information.

  • It's not a bad idea for an app...The only drawback is that as an experienced collector who is looking for a special coin has spent years learning and researching his desire.Along comes this dude with this app. on smart-phone and with one click brings up all the data he needs to snatch that coin........Kinda ironic what technology brings......!!!

  • Cool idea. Not sure if there's enough money to be made from it though to justify writing such complex software.

Can an application use someone else’s proprietary data bases? i.e. Coin Facts and the Population reports are both pay for use sites.

How about a negotiating app? It scans the seller and tells you the lowest price he or she will accept! image

It will be a scary world when the use and advantages of human intelligence, education, memory, and judgment is mostly replaced by "apps"

And people scoffed at my insistance that computer grading will become a reality. It will. Cheers, RickO

    O.K.
    This is not surprising.

It's been reported that an app is coming that will allow you to hold up your phone to a face.
The app will then i.d. that person for you using google images, social network sites etc.

Keeping it coin related; this could be helpful at shows for dealers to i.d. potential PITAs.
