MacNeil's Washington figure, weekend photo

veryfineveryfine Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭
Just thought I'd share my quick nighttime snapshots of Hermon MacNeil's (of Standing Liberty Quarter fame) "Washington at War" statue, situated on the east pier of the Washington Square Arch. I live in New York and was strolling around Manhattan's west village this past weekend, examining one of my favorite monuments. The statue has been the victim of much erosion over the years, yet still looks so impressive.

What makes it even more special is the inscription, H.A. MacNeil 1916; yes, the first year of our beloved Standing Liberty Quarter! I tried to zoom in on that detail, but unfortunately, it’s not very clear. Anyway, for those who are interested, enjoy viewing the pictures.

  • Thank you for sharing. I've been to New York City once and that's enough for one lifetime.
Nothing bad about NYC, just that nothing I had ever experienced in my lifetime prepared me to drive in NYC.

Come visit us...There's a lot of the untarnished stuff in Stacks and Brigandis. Just leave the icon pic thingy at home. image
  • Last time I went to Wash. Sq. Park, it was closed! It was past midnight, but this is NYC! I used to hang out there until the daylight hours as a teen.

You can see some beautiful Saint Gaudens statues when visiting Manhattan.
