I wish they had made Proof sets in 1949. This is from a year set I put together years ago. And no, not everything has gone up in price since the 1980s. I paid a high wholesale price from this 1949-S which was graded MS-64 at the time, and I'm forever buried in it. Back in the late 1970s and early'80s coins like this were the "poor man's" hedge against inflation. All it did was make the poor, poorer as prices kept falling. Though the years the P, D, and S mint 1949 half dollars have all traded places for "top dog" for the date.
