1949-D PCGS MS66 FBL RAINBOW Franklin

image

I bought this coin off Teletrade for a cool 700$ , then a year or two later , I sold it on Teletrade for 1250$ ...........

I was not comfortable with the tone , as I thought it was questionable ...........

shows what I know - the coin now resides in a PCGS MS66 FBL holder , prolly easily saleable @ over 10 grand ;

    Oh that cuts deep ..........., several of the one's that got upgraded I tried myself to do ........ you just never know what can happen on any given day ......

    I do know that the majority of the D mints that got the boost were resubmitted by two of the Kings of Franklins ; R. Tomaska and Steve Leber -

    they got that magic touch !

    Look on the bright side - you have an excellent eye for FBL Franklins, and you made a profit of over 50% on this coin. Why not try to find other really nice Franklins and try to make money on those as well?

    Fred ,

    darn good suggestion ..........I try - hell , I spend many , many hours each week looking high and low . And I did make some money on them -

    but take the Monster 52-D I sold in a 65 holder , it was a dream coin and I doubt I will ever see another with the lime green and purple that one had .

    Sold it for 900$ 8 or 9 years ago ............ Leber got it in a 66 holder and got a whopping $5000 for it .

    I would have prolly bet anybody a thousand bucks that coin would never get a 66 @ PCGS ..........

    again - what the hell do I know

    Well, it does suck a little, but you got a profit out of it, so you can be happy for that.
    It is a nice coin, next time you buy a 65, make sure it isn't a 66 before selling. image

    That '49-d looks like legit mint set toning to me, although hard to say for sure from those images. But every once in a blue moon good old mother nature graces her presence to some mint set Frankies.

    Now with the grading thing, you know one day it's a ms66, the next it's a 65FBL, and then a 66+ no FBL... image

    yes , yes it is ; now the very first 1951-D MS66 FBL "Plus" ........I couldn't be happier for the new owner !

    Of coarse that particular magnificent coin (which I believe has no peers) was earmarked for Ronyahski's "A" set ;

    he could have gone from a 51-D that is one of the weakest coins in his set - to one that would be one of the strongest coins in his set ;

    but the man who was known for throwing countless thousands of dollars to high rolling Franklin dealers,

    cheeped out on me and refused to pony up for the coin . A coin like the 51-D that Plused comes around once every 15 or 20 years :

    he will regret not buying it for many a year to come image

    Hey PawPaul

    I have 18 1962-1963 Franklins from (1) submission I made last year...there were 19 total but I drilled a hole in the slab of one of them and screwed it on the wall of the bar I go to to play darts........

    .......Anyway all (19) graded PCGS MS64 .........NO Bell Lines........none 0...kaput..

    Anyway I'm thinkin that if I send them to you and you sign them.( $5 bucks each)..they will sell big time......to folks thinking of the future...image....in a year or so...64fbl, 65 fbl....

    ........oh then when they start toning.......the sky is the limitimage

    Reb,

    I'm quoting facts that have taken place over the last two decades ..........coins like the one's mentioned are very hard to find , and you have to know

    when you find/see them just how special they are .

    If you build a reputation for paying more then most others -then the coins will often find you !

    Let's be realistic PP. Coulda', woulda', shoulda' abounds in all fields. I live in Silicon Valley. I can't tell you the number of companies stocks that I have seen split the number of their shares multiple times (so that a person's original cost for a given share would be at most a few cents) so that a person could quite literally make a fortune... only to watch those companies go belly up a few years later. Timing may be everything (well, luck sure helps), but as long as you made a profit and got to enjoy those coins along the way, don't pee and moan too much. After all, given the way Franklins and the economy are performing these days, you stand a chance of buying these coins back in 5 years for less than you sold them for.

    Yeah, well, let's not forget that a LOT of the mint set toned '49-D's (and by this I mean the generic toned coins, not the exceptionally pretty ones) have all the luster of gray mud.
