Or is it someone testing their counterfeiting skill against the abilities of the PCGS graders?

Might just be feeling cynical... but I like this guess.

Is that what you get with a counterfeit, questionable authenticity ? Does this mean that PCGS wasn't sure ?

PCGS can't say "counterfeit" for legal and law enforcement reasons.

I went to lunch with a buddy who (unbeknownst to him) ended up paying for his lunch with a counterfeit $10. The clerk confiscated it and told him it was counterfeit. They would not even let us examine it so in an effort to keep this all up and up for obvious reasons, we asked them to call the cops.

The cops agreed it was counterfeit and DID let us examine the note. It was an obvious conterfeit but the whole point being, once a merchant detects a counterfeit, they are obligated to confiscate it and turn it over to the authorities.

Imagine the uproar if you, in good faith, submitted a bunch of coins and were informed that the entire submission was counterfeit and had been turned over to the Treasury Department.

I think "questionable authenticity" sounds prety good.

I doubt it; if it was a test, a single counterfeit would have been submitted with a bunch of real coins.

This is not the first time
an entire submission has been deemed Q.A , and apparently will not be the last .

Much more would need to be learned about the specific coins in these cases before drawing any type of educated conclusions .

Maybe they wanted PCGS to certify them as Questionable Authenticity! image

Tough lesson there for someone I am sure.

I would really like to hear the story behind that deal.
Its would be like watching a train wreck.
You kinda of wish PCGS could keep those coins as several of them are high dollar dates and could live to bite some unsuspecting bargin hunter.

Nope, that isn't going to leave a mark, that is going to do some serious scarring. image

It would be very interesting to hear the details of some of those coin deals.
