Trying for a Plus with a green-holdered coin

If someone sends in a coin in a PCGS green holder to try for a PCGS plus and it does not get the plus, does he lose the green holder??

Yes, every coin that is regraded (and being considered for a +) by PCGS will be cracked out of its holder, scanned, and then placed in one of the new PCGS Secure Plus holders.....so, yes you will lose the old green holder.

The question you should ask yourself is, Do I really want to lose the old green holder?...as many people out there may pay a slight premium for coins in these old PCGS holders since they are "perceived" to be graded conservatively, with an emphasis on the word perceived.

I agree, but will add that a green holder also tells me that the coin has been in that holder for a long time. To me, that attribute has some value.

I agree. In fact, I think the stability that older holders provide - along with the knowledge that the coin has not been messed with, at least, in the past several years - is more important than any "perceived" conservative grading.

That sounds like the hubble telescope looking for a new star.
...but it's a well thought out question. I'd stick with the historical artifact way more than the new hype.
    It's ORIGINAL.

I would stay with the old green-labeled holder. I still believe coins in the SecurePlus holders, without the Plus, will bring less money. With the green label, prospective buyers will know the coin was never submitted for the Plus, not the case with the Secure only coins.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

To add one more point, if it's a copper coin you're refering to with a RD or RB designation, many of us appreciate that the color hasn't turned in a long period of time and would pay a premium for it in the OGH.

My quarterly special submission was a coin in an OGH image

It wasn't a copper coin though, so I felt ok about it image Of course I'll feel much better with a plus or an upgrade image

It is my understanding that if you try to cross say an NGC coin and you select cross at same grade or higher, if it does not do so, it stays in the NGC holder. If thats the case why cant you select cross at one grade higher for the OGH? The 1 grade being the +, and if it does not then shouldnt it stay in the OGH? Surely an OGH slab is as arbituary as the NGC slab. A slab is a slab, if it can stay in one it can stay in the other?

It's worth a lot to me to know that a red copper coin in an old older isn't going to turn brown any time soon, that a white silver coin won't blacken or show spittle marks, dip/milk spots, or fingerprints, that a rare mintmark isn't going to fall off, or that a gold coin won't slough off a bunch of putty.

I don't think you can select cross at one grade higher. The min. grade you can put for a crossover is the same grade on the holder, and you can't cross MS/PR70s.

My experience has been if you send a coin in an OGH to PCGS for ANY reason they will reholder it.
