Why did this Morgan get a Gold Bean ?

Does CAC think it is a higher grade or PL ? Thank you in advance for your comments. Sorry if the photos are not up to par but i am trying.

    From the pictures, it looks at least PL.

    (Although I must add a disclaimer that i'm not a morgan guy by any stretch image )

    It is so hard to tell form the Heritage scans. I think the mark on U in UNUM is on the slab. The fields look very clean. If CAC thought it would 65pl would that gold bean? Generally it seems like OGH were looser with the PL designation so I dont think that is the case.

    CAC put the gold sticker on this Morgan to warn the owner of the coin not to sell it for the grade on the holder.

    Looks like a 66PL to me
    When in doubt, don't.

    That coin has an exceptional cheek, especially given that the frostiness would accent even light chatter. If those photos were posted and the declared grade was 67, I wouldn't complain. The second set of images indicates that a PL/DMPL designation may also be in order. Granted I don't think the photos are good enough to get a definite understanding, but I like what I see.

    Because John (or somebody at CAC) thought it was superior for the ms65 grade.

    First of all, the coin in question is perhaps ONE date that most Morgan experts would place in their top 3 for the series in terms of strike, quality, DMPL, PL or whatever.

    Nice coin and 66PL, at a minimum, seems appropriate.

    The 80-s and 81-s are held to a higher standard and this example is nice and then there is terrific and the measurement for this date in high grade gets a little fuzzy because there is such a high surviving population in high grade.

    I cant think of a better 65 that i have seen. Awesome coin! Compare that coin to some of the CC's in 65 holders and it will be a real eye opener.

    Actually, it means that they thought it was superior TO, not for, the MS65 grade. In other words that it was under-graded, not merely high end for the assigned grade.

    Very attractive toning, obv. appears more PL than the rev. IMHO.
    Sometimes suttle toning is better than extreme toning.
    The cheeck is nearly mark free, perhaps 66 on a good day?
    I like the coin, despite it being common in DMPL/PL, and what coinkat said.

    I doubt that. He is very considerate in making sure he doesn't post anything which could fairly be construed as spam.

    The coin looks like it could rate an MS-66, but how many collectors really care? High grade, well struck S mint dollars from the late 1870s and early 1880s are kind of boring so far as I"m concerned because there are so many of them. This coin might be more collectable because of the gold CAC sticker than anything else.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    In my opinion, the coin does look undergraded, at least from the pics. I would grade it 66pl from the pics. The cheek is real clean, and no marks to speak of, with very minimal chatter in the fields. I agree with most of what has already been said, and the gold bean adds more value than an upgrade to 66, or possibly more than an upgrade to 66pl. If it were my coin, I would keep it in that holder with the sticker.

    I think it just misses DMPL but clearly that is a PL and as someone said it wouldnt look out of place in a 67 holder. I think the PERFECT grade for that one is MS66+PL

    Looks like gold bean material to me. Instead of the bean I would have regarded it...even better cracked it out and resubmitted. Looks like possbile MS66 and at least PL. Both would be worth more than a 65 with the bean.
