My colleague, Nelson Whitman, from Capitol Coin Co. in downtown DC was robbed last Friday afternoon in his office of the following:

    Wow, that was quite the haul.

    Should be easy to track the bigger coins in the group, but not as easy for the more generic gold.

    Hope they recover all the coins, and catch the thief/thieves

    It seems like coin theft like this never ends. Is it always this frequent??? I am fairly new here but I feel like I am hearing of someone getting robbed every week or so image

    Yes there have been a lot of recent reports. Everyone must be very vigilant/careful. For the individuals out there....be careful what you disclose online and keep everything locked up in a Safe Deposit Box at a bank. That is what I do.

    For the dealers and store fronts...may luck and God be on your side....then carry a firearm/stungun and have a good security system and keep a very good inventory system...including cert/serial numbers and keep that documentation in multiple places....and it doesn't hurt to have a friend or two along with at all times....when traveling to shows etc. It sucks that there are people like this in this world.

    I knew Mr. Whitman personally when I was stationed in D.C. from Aug. 1977 - Aug. 1979. Hes a great guy to do business with. Do hope all works out for him.
    I also did some business with Mr. Julian Leidman in Silver Springs, Md. but didn't know it at the time.

    As I understand it, there were three people involved. Two distracted the employees and the third snuck into the area that these coins were and grabbed them, I think.

    I don't think guns of any kind, no matter what, are legal for civilians to have in D.C.
    Maybe the perpetrators knew this. I hope they are caught soon. I would also like
    to see some "street justice", at least once, served by one of the many armed coin
    dealers.

    I visited that shop a year ago and enjoyed it.

    I've been to his shop many times. One of the few shops in DC and always kind. Kids can take a long time to spend some allowance.

    This is just getting out of hand, has it always been like this? Or has the economy just taken a toll and thieves look for precious metals and such as an easy theft? I think something needs to be done to protect these shops and vendors which are basically mini banks to these thieves.

    That is precisely why firearms are necessary for citizens - and why the Supreme Court issued the decision that D.C. gun law was unconstitutional and forced the change. I truly hope the coins are recovered - but even more fervantly hope the scum are shot and killed at their next attempted robbery. Cheers, RickO

    My folks were held up at thier store in Balto. City in 1982. The dirtbag held a gun to my Mom's head. My dad hit the holdup alarm and then pulled his legal gun. As the guy moved the gun towards my Dad, my Dad shot and killed the jerk. Even in Balto. store owners are allowed to be armed. At least business is safe for the thugs in DC!!

    Of course the way that the law in D.C. is structured, while one can own a gun it is all but usless for defensive purposes.

    Trio charged in Greenburgh with trying to sell stolen 1790s coins

    From LoHud.com:

    GREENBURGH — Police have arrested three men accused of trying to sell a pair of stolen 18th century silver dollars to a local jeweler.

    Greenburgh police said they got a tip Tuesday that someone might be pawning rare coins — 1790s silver dollars worth $25,000 and $15,000 — stolen from a Washington, D.C., dealer.
    The tipster said the coins, swiped in a cache during a strong-arm robbery on June 11, would be taken to the Tarrytown Jewelry Store at 299 N. Central Ave.
    Detectives staked out the store and arrested Melvin Simon, 52, of Rockville, Md.; and Charles Mobley, 50, and Gregory Barnes, 62, both of Washington. All three were charged with two felony counts of criminal possession of stolen property.
    Simon and Mobley were also charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument after police recovered forged driver's licenses and military identifications from them. Police said both men tried to use false names to skirt outstanding arrest warrants from the U.S. Marshals Service.
    Simon and Mobley have extensive criminal histories for numerous violent felonies, police said.
    All three were arraigned in Town Court and are being held without bail at the Westchester County jail. They are scheduled to return to court Friday.

    The other day I posted a comment saying I thought the story was "Odd" I received a email from Tarrytown Sholp which I repost below..... this really clears it up Jon


    "The press release was very vague and inaccurate even so far as my address is concerned. The following is what occurred: At 1:00 last Wednesday a man entered my shop offering to sell a slabbed 1795 dollar in AU55 and an ANACS 1796 cleaned dollar. While he was in the shop I called a fellow dealer and was told that the coins were part of the proceeds of a Wash. D.C. robbery. The seller wanted cash for the coins which gave me the opportunity to stall him long enough to alert the Greenburgh Police as I told him I need two hours to get the funds together. When he returned at 3:30 the police had staked out the parking lot and arrested three persons who appear to be the ones who committed the robbery and to retrieve the bust dollars and other items. In effect, I was the tipster. Nice to see some positive results for a change."
