One of my submissions this week...1885 Liberty Proof / Opinions / Grade In 1st post
Sorry for bad pics...could not set up camera in the usual place today...wife was baking.
Trust me...it has luster and mirrors. Coin was stored in a sealed 'plastic' 1 x1...no opening. Unsure if there was PVC in the holder.
Purchased from the family who cared for it since it was originally bought. The original collector had a real
eye for collecting coins...he had a great collection. Mostly cents, nickels in MS and Proofs.
16096749 3883 1885 5C US PR64 Received 6/18 grade received today Some disapointment...perhaps some of the comments made by others pointed out the too lofty hopes for a 66. Super turn-a-round on this coin.
Again sorry for the bad pics...I will post grade when I get it.

Thanks for looking!

<< <i>That's one nice coin!

Bob, what do you base that on? It appears to be subdued and splotchy. And, of course, whatever hairlines it has, probably aren't evident. Based on the images, it looks like a PR63 or thereabouts.
Eric
We shall see when the grade is in!
This is one of the most unmolested collections I have seen or purchased.
The MS set had a AU something for the lowest grade and many MS...no cleaning!
Eric
What else was in this old time collection?
I absolutely hate to grade PR coins by images alone.
I really don't see any hairlines and the more learned
here seem to feel there are hairlines present.
I do see a small smattering of minute abrasions but
they are not serious enough to warrant a PR 63.
The discoloration is the only thing that bothers me.
Regardless, its a nice coin.

Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !

those pics are b/w right? (looks for eye glasses...)
Eric
are you positive that it is not a very well struck businessss strike?
I like it alot and would be happy to own it ( unless it cost me much more than $700 )
<< <i>interesting die crack towards the O in OF on the reverse
are you positive that it is not a very well struck business strike? >>
I dunno - among other things those numerals and type fonts seem to be pretty squared - then again it is in the AM...yawn..
Eric
<< <i>magikbilly- yes black & white...I could not get a good pic...will try a better one before it goes in. >>
Say, what do YOU think it grades? You are the only one seeing it in color and that's half the pic as far as I am concerned. Maybe more.
Eric
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
especially the one closest to the chin
if it is a proof, it might be limited to 64 max due to strike
if it is a business strike, it is very nice indeed and worth much more than a proof
<< <i>the reason I asked about the proof vs business strike is because the obverse stars has a couple that are weakly defined

Assuming that the coin is a Proof (and it appears to be), the strike is not nearly weak enough to affect the grade negatively.
Mark - I agree - good strike. icsoccer - I see you agree - We are alone!
