Today's San Antonio Small Coin Show Report

The show started at 9am and the plan was to be there when the doors opened.... well that was the plan anyway. Arriving about 9:30am it was nice to see parking was available as sometimes it is more of a challenge. Upon entering I was asked for my "invite card" for free admission. Well that went according to plan as I hadn't forgot it:

Walking through the door my first impression was that the place was packed. It was being held in the smaller of the two rooms and that helps the impression of the place being packed. Here's a blurry (sorry) crowd shot from the back of the room:

Today I had brought some left-overs from a silver selloff I did a couple of weeks ago and had hopes of maybe picking up something. Those of you that know what I've collected might chuckle but I've been intrigued lately by war nickels. When they are "nice" they almost glow in the dark. Finding one that is well struck can be a challenge and if you want full steps it's far tougher. They've been a nice break from my other collecting as there are LOTS and LOTS of them to look at and they are generally not too expensive. Besides it's Memorial Day weekend so it "fits" and it's fun.
Anyway back to the show. While the room was fairly crowded it did seem to clear out fairly quick. It looked like the dealers had a pretty good thing going as nice looking trays of food were being delivered to them... it was at that point I realized that I'm pretty hungry myself
.
First on the agenda was a fairly quick pass through glancing in the trays to see if anything really jumped out at me. A couple of the sellers had some nicer than usual material. I asked to look at a very eye-appealing Walking Liberty Half (not my series) that was in a PCGS 65 and had some really nice attractive toning going on. Upon hearing the price I decided I should do my homework first and not waste mine or the dealers time as it seemed to be a very high price ($450 or something like that). Who knows, maybe it was a steal. I moved on and just did some window shopping, but trying to make mental notes of where to go back to.
Now came the time to sell off some silver (at 3 different tables) to pocket some cash. Pretty much what I expected, I should have brought some lube
.
Then a last tour through the room to hit the tables I'd noted earlier. I should have done this earlier as by now I'm really hungry and in a hurry. Oh well... not wanting to leave empty handed I picked out 4 nickels that came from 3 different tables. With them in hand I walked out of the show with more cash in my pocket than I got there with; four newps, and a growling stomach. Anyway it was a good time.
This first one is kind of ugly... but I found it interesting. The pics don't show it that well but the reverse is full of major die cracks. One even goes all the way through Monticello. I'll have to get a better pic of the cracks later:

This next one glows like a headlight. It's not FS but it is pretty close...

The next one is a no brainer 5FS and almost 6. Very lusterous and looks great in hand.

The best is saved for last. Why is it the best? Easy... It was the least expensive AND it is EXTREMELY EYE APPEALING. It's a good example of what I enjoy about this hobby. I can get a lot of satisfaction out of a purchase of a beautiful coin and it doesn't even have to be expensive to enjoy it. That's just me though....

I don't know if I like this observation... but the folks at your local show look just like the folks at my local show...
Nice newps... glad to see another collector simply having fun with the hobby...

I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
<< <i>Just sold this to a guy across the street.

Never made it to the local show(s) the few times I was up in SA and there was a show going. Most all of my visits now are just a fast blast up to see my spine surgeon or to take care of a house sale I've got to arrange. Need a place by 1604 and N281?
<< <i>thanks for the report. Now that I don't live there and can't go to the show, I will point out the guy to visit first. He doesn't attribute his bust coins and often has problem-free stuff, albeit lower grade. Got a couple of cherries from him. It's the first table after that "half wall"...see the arrow. He often sells exonumia and Texas-related stuff
That's the first table I head to as well... a very nice guy in addition to everything else...
