2010 Gold Buffalo Proof Coins on Sale June 3
By Michael Zielinski on May 5th, 2010

The United States Mint will begin sales of the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo on June 3, 2010. This is the collector version of the popular 24 karat gold bullion coin.
Sales of the bullion version of the coin recently began on April 29, 2010. Sales to date have have reached 61,000 of the one ounce gold coins. The bullion coins are sold through a network of authorized purchasers who distribute the coins to other dealers and the public, as well as facilitate a two way market.
The proof version of the 2010 Gold Buffalo will be sold directly by the United States Mint. Proof Gold Buffalo coins have been offered each year since 2006. For the first two years, only one ounce proof coins were produced. During 2008, the US Mint vastly expanded offerings with fractional proof coins and fractional and one ounce uncirculated coins. The additional coins were canceled before the end of the year, with plans to resume issuing one ounce proof coins only.
The 2009 Proof Gold Buffalo went on sale October 29, 2009 after months of uncertainty about the status of the offering. The US Mint offered the coins without a maximum mintage or household ordering limits, initially priced at $1,360 each. Sales continued until March 29, 2009 when a sell out was announced. The last reported sales for the product was 49,388.
The US Mint plans to offer the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo coins in one ounce size only. Pricing will be determined based on the average price of gold and subject to adjustment as frequently as once per week in response to changes in the underlying value of gold. For an average weekly gold price within the $1,150 to $1,199.99 range, the coins would be priced at $1,460 each. The US Mint has not announced whether the coins will be subject to a maximum mintage or household ordering limits.

I want to buy cause it's a Buffalo... and there will be little offerings from the lovely Mint this year and selection may worsen as PM's rise in price.
So, in conclusion Bully, as much as I can!

<< <i>Hi Michael, Thanks for posting this here. Don't you suppose initial sales volume will be substantially affected by many people watching the gold spot price, hoping to save by buying after a downward fluctuation, especially if the price is hovering near one of the mint's price-break points? Unless of course they're chasing after a PCGS first-strike label, for which they might end up paying not merely the extra $18 to PCGS but also an extra $50 to the mint? >>
You are welcome, botanist!
I paid $1025 for my 2008-W.....it's now worth over $4k.
The 2010-W will be near $1500 or higher from the Mint.
I still think it will appreciate nicely, especially if the Mint stops production early as they did in 2008.(Am I right here?)
All the 200X-W Gold Buffs seem to have a record of crazy appreciation IMHO!!
Hopefully ericj96 will chime in here!!

Miles, that is as good a reason to buy as any!!
That's the same day as the next First Spouse release.

Yes, and with the ascending price of PM's, gird your pocketboook and download your CC for big rises in price!
Cost averaging Mint style!

who is loading up despite the price, and who is holding back, and who doesn't care about the price and will buy their quantity no matter?
I'm somewhat concerned about the price but will buy at least one. I may go for more just to score a 70 FS but no more than around 3. Although a 70 FS isn't a huge factor as my 2008 and 2009 are 69s.
If the rumors are true, these are popular overseas and there should be at least a little price support out there should gold take a slight dip. However, who knows.
IMHO, a mintage limit and say a 5 coin order limit would be very positive to keep one and flip 4

Wow, that is amazing. Do you think the bidders thought it was a $50?
What could possibly drive $300 worth of gold to over $4,000. ? (
However, it's (the coin) a beautiful thing to see as far as the "COIN" is concerned, and the hobby must be relatively healthy, in my humblest of opinions.
With that said, I will have to order a few of these for customers, but it's still beyond my budget to collect. Maybe in time. I'm not a huckster, per se., just a coin geek.
I like these coins and they really worth purchasing. Period. It's gold and it's tough to lose money when one is holding it.
End of message, already.

I'm going to try for more than 1 though. I wanna see if I can score a 70 for a change.
In other words, one of the mint's price-break determination points is $1200., and a gold buffalo from the mint will cost $50 less when the spot price goes down a few bucks from $1201 to 1199.
Another price-break point is $1250., and if while hoping for a dip below 1200, one notices the price spiking up close to 1250., it might be prudent to buy quickly. Of course, any of these actions involving saving $50 might seem silly by December, when the 2010 proof Buffalo will probably still be available, but perhaps for a substantially different amount.
<< <i>Not this time... I suspect, with no order limit, this Buff. will be plentiful. >>
If its not you will be kicking yourself. The thing I like about the buffs is that if you bought from the mint at the time of each issue since 2006 you would have always come out ahead. Happily holding 3 PR70s from each year

You can thank the price upswing in Gold for that scenario. The only proof buff that's been a real winner, was the 2008's,(low mintage & one year fractionals) the rest are just trading a few % above bullion.
BTW, as it stand right now, the Mint's issue price will be $1510.....

Like I said "you would have always come out ahead."
Maybe I should clarify. I have made it a point to only collect only PR70s. 2008 was the first year I bothered with FS. Any that I purchased that did not make the grade I flipped and purchase 70s asap. Mebbe I have the rising price of gold to thank; I like to thank my dad for giving me the goldbug back in the 1974 (he/we were gold miners). My mother tried to re-infect me with this malady in 1999 when she announced that she was going to Whitehorse YT to buy 100 maple leafs (and smuggle them back) for the exorbitant price of $303 a peice. I told her my money was doing to good in the NASDAQ. I a nutshell; I could get $1800 a peice for all my buffs and substantially more fore the 2008s at a fire sale. A few percent above bullion? We wil just have to agree to disagree.
<< <i>recent ebay sales for (non-first strikes) are more like $1500 for 06w and $1650 for 07w and 09w's >>
You are splitting hairs. Even at those prices I am up 100% on each of those issues.
8+ % here. I rest my case.

Just don't try to sell your buff's on eBay....your 8% "windfall" will turn into a 2% loss.
