Ever wonder...

How the hell did CAC put a sticker on that coin? More and more I am beginning to doubt CAC... 1919-D

This particular coin is anything but attractive...

    You're joking, right?

Edited to add: it got a sticker because it's solid for the grade, which to me it is
  • What would I be joking about?

A key date that is horribly struck (par for the course) and then has black spots all over it... where does it seem like I am kidding?

Those spots look like remnants of a dip. I agree, no eye appeal on that one worthy of a sticker. It seems key dates get stickers in any high condition.
  • Mushy Strike and distracting spots... I'm with the OP on this one. I'd expect better for a CAC in au 55.

I have wondered, on occasion. But, while I much prefer un-dipped, spot-free coins, from what I can see, the one you linked looks solid for the grade. So I don't wonder about it. A coin need not be attractive in order to qualify as solid for the grade.

CAC stickers denotes only solid for the grade as Stone pointed out. I'm guessing that this is a technical solid 55 for the date/mm.....Heritage pics are no real help. MJ

CAC is an OPINION, not perfection, just like anyone else.

Coin looks fine to me in the photo. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

While the coin may technically merit the grade, it appears dipped and spotted which in my mind should preclude stickering. Now, I don't know if the coin looked like that when CAC saw it or if it turned afterwards. I also don't know if the coin actually looks like that in hand, as it may be a bad pic.

Why? I don't see anything on the CAC website that says that. This is your opinion, which you have a right to, but it is not an industry opinion.

Obviously every one's not going to agree with every CAC stickered coin in the marketplace. This example looks solid for the grade but the eye appeal isn't there for me.
But CAC doesn't sticker coins for eye appeal? right?
    "It is what it is."
  • See,
I actually thought CAC stickered for eye appeal and the + was just for technical merit... Maybe I got it wrong-

Who says a dipped coin can't CAC?

CAC stickered coins can be judiciously dipped. PCGS plus coins can be judiciously dipped as well it seems.............MJ

You are correct, it is simply my opinion. I guess I thought that coins which received the CAC seal of approval are supposed to be "unmessed with". Again, haven't checked their website, and I may simply misunderstand.

It's about the grade, not how pretty or PQ it is.

Certainly looks like a choice AU to me. While not the prettiest one, it looks pretty much all-there for the grade.

I would have to say ,that the coin is not CAC worthy.

Only its mother could love that homely mutt.CAC does

make mistakes and I believe that is one of them.

However, what the heck do I know, I.m just a fuzzy bear.

A bit too white for my tastes, but it's a solid white 55 for anyone who likes white coins. Weakly struck yes, but find me a 19-D Walker that isn't.

to bad dipped coins are acceptable and can be slabbed, but if they werent
I guess TPG's would have little to no market to slab...........

IMO PQness refers more to technical excellence than it does to EA; therefore one would expect a CAC'd coin to be superior in that respect. I recently opined here that EA seems to take a back seat when deciding to sticker a coin and was taken to task on that point and that EA really does count. JA sometimes posts here so maybe he would comment.
