Help on my 1795 Bust Dollar

dohdoh Posts: 6,457 ✭✭✭
So I submitted this coin at Central States hoping for an upgrade to XF40...

Old holder:

This is what I found today:
1 1 16332798 96858 1795 $1 Off-Center Bust US VF35

So, it upgraded to a VF35 which isn't too bad, but now it's an Off Center Bust...the old holder said it was the Center Bust...so which is it?

My first impression was VF35, but the coin is the Off-Center variety.

Yeah, I knew it was a pretty outside shot at a 40, but I figured the jump in price was worth the gamble. Surprising about the Off Center...it was in a mislabeled holder for 15 years... Thanks for the info.

Thanks! I'm not sure on the price increase...not huge probably, but enough to pay for the grading I'd guess. I don't have access to the PCGS price guide, so I don't know what PCGS says the increase is. I'm glad I got a bit of an upgrade. image

That is a great looking coin. I think the Obverse would hit 40 easy but the reverse kept it to 35 ?

    That's Great Doh !
Took a peek at the pcgs prices, you just got $500 bucks richer. $6,300 in 30, $6,800 in 35.

It's all about the $$$$$$$$...... I remember when it was the coin that was important (still is, to me). Cheers, RickO

For the record, I submitted this coin for the Secure Plus service. I knew full well it couldn't get a + since it's a lower grade, but I wanted the protection the SP service provides against doctors. So, yes, it's still about the coin.

yeah, I figured posting those $$ values might be a little bit fishy, but as you can see, Doh had the good taste not to toss them
up there himself. How can you ever seperate coins and money ?

That's a very beautiful coin Doh, I would say x-f 40, but it's really not my series. This coin has a great look to it and can reside in my collection any time!!image

remind me again how the new holder protects this coin, in your possession, from doctors, any better than the old holder did?

coingrats on the upgrade, I like your taste in this coin and others in your collection

Congrats on the upgrade. Here's an example of an off center early dollar error in XF for comparison.

Well I know the coin won't be in my possession forever... But I also know that if someone really wants to doctor this coin they could crack it and submit it under the regular submission....but, eh...I figured what the heck? At least I'll get a fancy new holder image

Not sure you are still asking which is it, but below is the Cardinal dollar center bust. Star 1 is adjacent to the lowest curl,
the highest wave curl is below the E and there are 6 berries on the rev. It is a B15.

The B14 off center has Star 1 adjacent to & touches the second curl, the high wave is below the B and there are 7 berries
    on the rev.

    Yours is a B14.

One really cant be too vigilant when it comes to coin doctors. I did some research on the subject and came up with this frightening tale...
"Seduced by the simplicity of the formulas to double the quantity of gold, Jose Arcadio Buendia paid court to Ursula for several weeks so that
she would let him dig up her colonial coins and increase them by as many times as it was possible to subdivide mercury. Ursula gave in, as always, to her
husbands obstinacy. Then Jose Arcadio Buendia threw three doubloons into a pan and fused them with copper filings, orpiment, brimstone, and lead.
He put it all to boil in a pot of castor oil until he got a thick and petilential syrup which was more like common caramel than valuable gold."
Although this was translated from spanish, it just goes to show that you can never be too careful. In this case it was a trusted family member caught
    in the act of doctoring...
