Weirdest Ebay request I have EVER had in 8+ years....advice please?

I had someone pull the trigger on a BIN auction I had. It was a 1954 Topps Ted Williams SGC 3 that sold for $100. Just today, the buyer Emails me and asks me if I would take $85 for the card (after he already hit the BIN button 3 days ago). Says he contacted Beckett and "book" value on the 3 is only $90......what would you do if you were me??

Just send him a cancellation request and relist it. You get your fees back, somebody else will buy it, and you block him from further bidding.
Otherwise you might get a chargeback or a negative.
Ebay is getting worse
That's the card.....VCP is $97 and some change.......to make matters worse, he also pulled the trigger on a 1952 Bowman Bob Feller and hasn't paid for that either (although he hasn't asked me for a discount on the Feller).....

<< <i>Would you even try to get the final value fees back? Would you cancel the transaction on BOTH cards or just the Ted Williams one? >>
I would ask him nicely if he still wants the other card. I don't deal with these people. I just politely tell them no thanks and mutually agree to cancel.
Dont negotiate with terrorists. Politely tell him you are willing to cancel the transaction. 3 times out of 4 he's gonna just pay the $100.
"...Nothing...pull a Kennedy and have him make the next move...which is to pay...."
////////////////////////////////////////
That works, sometimes.
.......
First step: BLOCK BIDDER LIST.............. NOW. cripes.
If he does not pay, send him the request to cancel.
If he refuses to cancel, he can still NEG you.
.......
NEVER list a BIN w/o using the Immediate Payment Required feature.
It's been several years since I have had to talk to any of the kind of
FILTH you are having to deal with. If not for IPR, I would have left
EBAY long ago.

Sad deal! Reference him to Vcp past sales, Tell him average price of Very Good condition card is $97.50...
If buyer cannot realize this tell him that you are cancelling. Geez another beckett dude
But in this case the seller clicked the bin and now is intitled to pay the full price.
another option....Gift payment maybe??

<< <i>That is a BS move and he is the type of bidder that sours ebay. I never have a BIN without a Instant Payment, it just avoids these types of problems. When you hit the BIN button or Place a bid, you should already have decided if you are good with that price. >>
Unless it is a BITDFN (Buy It Three Days From Now)
You should absolutely try to cancel the request as once the transaction is cancelled he will be unable to leave you feedback.
Also, if you're willing to work things out and be understandable with allowing buyers to purchase your items without instant pay, then why not work with the buyer since he purchased more than one item from you?
Hope it all works out,
Patrick
I've had buyers who bought multiple cards at once that inquired about a discount, but only BEFORE they actually purchased the cards. I'm sure if he had emailed you prior to hitting the BIN and said 'hey I'm interested in a few cards--can you work with me on the prices of card X and card Y', This whole unfortunate situation could have been avoided.
I agree with the consensus--cancel, block, relist.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
<< <i>You cannot retract a purchase made through a Buy It Now listing. Once you confirm your purchase, you are obligated to pay the seller.
Let them know you contacted Ebay's Trust & Safety department about their question and that's the reply they sent you,,,,, they also said the only way to avoid paying the agreed on price was a "Mutual Agreement to Cancel" the transaction and that its seller initiated ,,,,,,, you will start the process if they'd like ,,,,,
Say nothing more,,,,,,,, please post the reply from the buyer here and I'll advise further ,,,,,

And then duck as the neg flies your way.

It is likely so.
In my experience, using passive agressive techniques on EBAY
crooks/maroooons is a wasted/risky effort.
The ONLY thing that works for me is to drop them like hot coals
at the FIRST sign of ANY problem. Communicating with them
outside of the dispute-panels only feeds into their manipulative
games AND prolongs the kind of drama that salves their lonely
lives.
Trying to be cordial with sidewinders - or to rehab a bad EBAYer -
is a very dangerous game. You can never get either one to do
what you want them to do.
<< <i>And then duck as the neg flies your way.
gecko, I want to talk to your mother.
i think thats crap, sometimes dont have the cash on hand and if they pay within a week, whats the problem? if your that desperate for cash, maybe you should take a 2nd job. I've never not been paid, sometimes it takes a week, sometimes two weeks.
I like this answer: "I don't have to have instant payments. Sometimes buyers don't want to miss deals, but have to wait until payday. Some people live paycheck to paycheck. I understand that. I can be very accomodating with delayed payments."
In response to the original problem, don't negotiate, cancel the transaction and block the bidder.
<< <i>"If a person doesn't have the money, they shouldn't be buying cards on eBay, which is why I use the instant payment option...if you don't use this option, they will come back and either not pay, make excuses, or try to get the original price lowered."

I don't want to sell anything to anybody who doesn't have the money on hand to pay me.
<< <i>Bidder responded. Accused me of talking trash (I don't believe anywhere in this thread did I talk trash)........I really don't like what Ebay has become. >>

good luck, hope it works out

If you don't out the dirtbag then starting a thread here is just a way of complaining about ebay problems.
The guy you're dealing with is a turd, and he needed a good outing. If he had any honor he would have just paid for the item and kept his stupid face shut.
Sorry to hear about his antagonizing you about this thread. That's typical of his type.
To the lowly buyer... Man up, pay up and leave good feedback like you should.
Allen's hypothetical situations were getting suspicious in my opinion.
Happy Mothers day.
IF someone here stirred the pot by contacting the bidder, SHAME ON THEM. Sounds like the seller is more trouble than they're worth and should be jettisoned from the transaction as soon as possible.
Any person that puts forth an offer to buy/sell/trade then after the transaction is accepted by both parties, attempts to change the terms (price, payment, shipping expense, delivery method, etc) is someone that I would never do business with again. I've run across a few here and a few over the years. It is just a bad way to do business.
Requiring Instant Payment on your BIN's is a great idea, BUT it also may lead to some interested buyers passing and not returning or remembering as they do not have access to the funds immediately. This doesn't mean that such are bad buyers, but sellers with a little patience and willingness to work with some buyers (those that ask questions in advance) will find that they WILL sell more material and typically get higher prices.
If a seller is willing to work with a potential buyer, especially on a higher dollar item, I would think that the Instant Payment option might actually have an adverse affect on some of these types of transactions.
Regardless, good luck and I hope it works out in your favor.

ALL VERY true.
My decision to use IPR was made by weighing the upside/downside.
The upside is that the savings in aggravation/labor are substantial.
The downside is that some good folks DO bypass IPR listings and fail to return.
I simply prefer to have EZ transactions, rather than to have more transactions.
.........................
When/If a shopping cart is rolled-out, buyers will find IPR more convenient
than they currently do.
Is the Apocalypse far off? Are you suggesting we are almost in agreement? Smack my azz and call me Bernadette!
Follow ebay guidelines, if he doesnt pay, give him an NPB strike. You'll get your FVF back and if he still negs you, it just proves that he is as classless as his act suggests

All a potential buyer would have to do is message the seller before hitting the BIN. Of course someone else could buy it while that was happening but that's life.
