I think that you should flip through the Red Book before you start on this. The half cent is very rare and hard to find. The half dime is a key date and very hard to find. The dime is also tough. As for the other coins, the gold will be a challenge. Although 1846 is not noted as a rare date for gold, the half eagle and eagle as type coins are very hard to find in Choice AU or better. As it is with most things, it can be done if you have a decent sized budget and are really dedicated, but won't be as easy as you might think.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

like BillJones says, check the prices realized for 1846 half dimes at the very least before embarking on this set.

These aren't too hard or expensive to locate, compared to the other denominations:

Sounds like a great idea to me.

I love the dime and half-dime, not familliar with the other denominations of that date.

    Don't have a picture of my 1846 H10c uploaded, but here's a quarter.

  • Of course I am aware of prices and have flipped through the red book- I just wanted to see the examples people have here on the board...

Why 1846? Because I want to.... I find that as I go along I am not getting as fulfilled by doing full sets... Thus I like these challenging type sets like this-- It is mixed with a few low mintage key issues but also has some inexpensive coins in it... So, that is why I like it-

I went through heritage, I know the prices, I know the rarity aspect... Just looking for people to share their examples...

Bill, i personally wouldnt include the half cent in a type set of 1846.......it was produced only as a proof and never was intended to circulate

  • I would most likely include the

    Half Dime
    Dime
    Quarter
    Half Dollar
    Dollar
    2.5$
    5$
    10$

Doubt I do mintmarks on the gold but depends on prices... Eliminating Proofs and I have only ever handle one large cent or half cent in my life so I doubt I include any copper....

I say good luck and go for it. I have put together an 1866 mint set for the last 6 years. It is fun and challenging; I need four more coins of the 28 needed to be finished.

Most coins in this set are tough, and challenging. I continue to upgrade, and just love the coins because they are all rare and hard to find. Certainly appreciate them much more then a common coin.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

I asked why as most of the time a year is selected because it has a special significance to the collectors family history.

This cent was the first coin photo that I posted when I first joined this forum. My photography skills have improved just a bit image

Even though the cent has problems and is pretty rough, it's one of most important pieces in my collection.

My father gave me the coin as a gift when I was 8 along with few other coins. He passed away the following year and I really don't have much else that is tangible that came from him. I remember at the time thinking the coin was pretty much the coolest thing ever since I just collected Indian Cents and Lincolns and had never had one of the Large Cents. For many years I actually thought the coin could have been uncirculated since the reverse looked so red or red/brown image

I too have some coins my Grandma gave that I will never part with.

I enjoy the coins that have been given to me by others the most of all my collection.

I think this is one of those leather-purse toned coins:
