Stupid Gold Question -little ot too.

Is the Earth still making more gold, or is it all done, or did gold just come from outer space on comets billions of years ago etc ?

Gold was all made before the earth was formed. Other than nuclear reactors and decay or naturally radioactive isotopes, there are not really any significant nuclear reactions going on earth today. No radioactive decay that I am aware of ends in gold. --jerry

The Earth may not be making any more gold, but the technology to recover it has been improving over time.

Wait till they figure out how to extract it from seawater!

I read somewhere that in Japan many oz of gold are recovered from the sewer system

Even if the could extract it for free, the energy to pump all that water thru the mechanism would make it uneconomical--unless electricity becomes free too. --Jerry

All elements heavier than iron were formed in a supernova, so no more gold is being produced (thus the earth, sun, and other planets in our solar system are formed from recycled material).

Nope, E=MC^2 says that matter can be converted to energy, and atom bombs are proof.

Jerry is right. All of the elements heavier than Iron were initially made in a supernova explosion near our cosmic neighborhood. Forget seawater, wait until they start mining asteroids. Some asteroids have a better assay than the best gold mines on Earth.

    Let's go!

Or we can stay here and start splitting atoms.

Saw a Discovery Channel show that said occasionally gold gets "spit" out from beneath the earth's surface by volcanoes. Although no new gold is made, I am quite sure there is still plenty far below the surface. Like oil, it gets more expensive to get to it.

Not created, but most likely recycled through thermal activity. I would imagin there is a fair amount of gold deep in the crust that occasionaly gets melted by the heat from the mantle and then is ejected in volcanic eruptions.

Very much overly simplistic. For example, we are continuously making more of certain elements by either natural decay or fission in nuclear reactors. Uranium naturally decays to lead to the total amount of lead on early is continuously increasing. Many other elements are also increasing from natural or man made nuclear reactions. The sum of matter and energy in every reaction is constant. Thus we must be losting something to create the daughter products. In the example I gave, the total amount of uranium in the world is constantly decreasing. --Jerry
