Morgan VAM experts - ever heard of or seen an 1881-P "Scarface"? Is this a candidate?

Recently ran across this pulling culls from rolls.

Any thoughts? Sure doesn't look PMD to me.

From here it looks like tooling. Is the break raised or level with the coin?

    Maybe a struck through?

    Strike through?

It almost seems more likely that somthing like a wire or thread was on the planchet on the time it was struck

I cannot really figure out anything having to do with causation... That's why I came to the experts image

As you can see in the photos, there is a jagged crack deep down in the opening, visible below the center piece of metal - which is slightly raised towards the top side and looks like a retained cud.

The defect itself is vaguely disturbing looking, and it has been pointed out that it is smoewhat reminiscent of an unmentionable part of human anatomy.

If it is a planchet defect rather than the result of a defective die, my assumption is that it is unique and not a coin worthy of being assigned a VAM number.

I believe that it could, however, be auctioned on eBay for a great deal of money because it is unique. If I choose that path, I will request assistance here for aid in the correct misspelling and misuse of words and excretory grammar necessary to adequately post an auction similar to those we have periodically seen there.

Poor attempt at the beginning of someone's initial. Looks carved with a pocket knife.
    Post mint damage maybe.

I'm highly inclined to agree with Bob.
    When in doubt, don't.

This is the closest ive seen something on another coin come to what is on my 1805 draped bust half. I have yet to get a definitive answer but mostly strikethru appears to be the minor consensus.

I'll be happy to send it to you for closer inspection.

Looking at the photographs, particularly the highly magnified pictures, I would believe it to be a planchet flaw. The crack, observed deep inside, indicates a flaw, rather than PMD... since a gouge would not impart a crack in the inner material. Cheers, RickO

PMD. Only non-PMD candidate would be a planchet flaw, but this looks like a knife was taken to it.

Looks like it could possibly be struck through a metal shaving or a bent wire, but I cannot be certain. I did meet Mr Weinberg at the Milwaukee show on Saturday. I can tell you what he told me about a few coins. "I would really have to see it in hand". Everything else is speculative, but it's good to see you posting again.
