I say AT all the way.

Looks air brushed to me. Sure does know how to highlight the right parts! Why would both
reverses be the same just mirrored? Just does not look NT to me.

Some nice colors, but I would have to say AT.

I have to admit if the Morgans are AT the person did a very good job. The toning does look a bit suspicious however due to the "perfectness" of the toning. Other than that, they look pretty much alike compared to other Morgan toners I have seen slabbed.

I don't know what you mean by "better", but unlike the Battle Creek coins, the ones in this thread don't look natural to me.

I get concerned when I see a symmetry on the obv and the rev. Also when the transition of color is blurry I tend to think it was imparted by heat like on number 2. I say AT all the way but number 1 could fool a lot of people. 2-not so many

the top coin looks to have characteristics which are legitimate but both have too much purple, which is always a warning sign for me.
  • relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,113 ✭✭✭✭✭
For lack of a better explanation, the toning appears to lay on top of the coin instead of being part of the coin, and this would lead me to believe this coin was artificially toned.

I'd say they defy logic. If they were original overlaping bag-toned coins, they would be toned on one side.

If anyone thinks those coins are naturally tarnished, they either should quit buying tarnished coins or get some serious instruction. Cheers, RickO

I would not buy those coins...

I just picked up a bag of 1962-d roosies from the west coast. They were in fact just as you described, all the toned ones are ONLY toned on one side and oddly, all of the toning starts in the middle of the coin [rev or obv] and makes its way outward toward the rims.

AT? Or a Master Coin Doctor making coins that look NT?

I wouldn't call him a Master Coin Doctor...far from it. But those would likely fool a newb that hadn't done his homework.
And it may be that the stuff that turns out really good goes for a try at a TPG, and the less satisfactory product goes on Ebay.

I know exactly who the OP is talking about.

I've reported many of his auctions for being blatantly AT but with no results.

Unfortuantely, it isn't against the law to sell AT'd coins. It could be some kind of fraud if the seller outright said the coins were NT and subsequently was proven in a court of law that he knew they were not. If he simply says, "Beautiful Rainbow Toning" Or something along those lines, he is stating an opinion and does not state the method that these coins aquired the toning.

We might all know that the coins are AT'd, but that probably doesn't concern Ebay, as there is not enough evidence to prove deciet or fraud.

The coin in the top pic looks better than the other coin shown. Still not good enough.

Gotta go AT on both of these Morgans making a judgment from the images.

Not NT in my opinion. 2nd time I looked at these and answered the same! Didn't see
    that I already responded!

  • AnkurJ, let me give you some advise. Supposing those coins were in PCGS SecurePlus slabs with Eliasberg bloodline and a CAC sticker on top of that. Throw in a Kurtdog sticker, too, what the heck? Would you like that tarnish any the more? If so, you're not looking at the tarnish, but at opinions on the tarnish. You're not collecting coins, but opinions on coins.

Look at the coin. Ask what you, AnkurJ, likes or dislikes about it. Believe me when I tell you, you'll be way ahead of the game.

I don't understand why members want to erase hide old threads. There would be a lot less repetition around here if people were not so lazy and used the search/archive. In fact, I do most of my learning there.
