I guess I don't know much about gold dollars because that doesn't look so bad to me. Just very cleaned with iffy pics. I know you know what you're talking about, so I'm sure it IS fake, but I can see how someone might be fooled.

That coin is a really bad fake. Very crude and amateurishly executed. Looks like it was struck from hand carved dies. Not even close to a real specimen.

    Auction Removed.

I think that once a seller has had a counterfeit coin auction removed.....any and all listings they put up in the future should be routed through a seperate listing "evaluation" that previews the item. yeah it would be a PITA for ebay but it would certainly clean up the act.

Thanks for the side by side comparison Ambro; I can easily see the differences now.

You're right Ambro51, the one on the left does look really fake. Thanks for the heads up.

The right one is the fake. The denticles are the most telling, but the overall look is poorly executed. Good call Ambro! image

I meant your left. image (just kidding about not being able to tell btw)

In a side by side you can really see the differences, especially for an inexperienced gold collector like me.

Be interested to see the detail of the fake with the clarity in photography of Ambro's coin. But I'm assuming it was left out of focus for a reason.

Its ashamed that there are fakes like this (and better ones) in the gold dollar series, and they are sold by both dealers and casual sellers, either intentionally or from lack of knowledge. This series is growing in popularity, I can see that by both the number of PM's I get, posts on these boards, and the increase in the bid action on ebay. Seldom does a coin go unsold on ebay, unless it is a slabbed coin with a high "fishing" price, or one with that puts out bad Karma. Even the junk, messed up jewelry pieces...find a buyer (for a price).

But this counterfeit problem needs to be abated. People will continue to buy in pursuit of a 'deal', the haze of uncertainty clouds judgements...and they are stuck with a piece of trash. Thankfully, ebay IS able to delete listings on the advice of collectors like us, a very valuable service we can all do is to watchdog these sales as much as possible. Of course, we cant always tell for certain, looking at a mere photograph, but even so the ones we do catch will be off the market at least for awhile. Im certain a LOT of sellers honestly do not know...but there is a small portion of sneaky 'dealers' who will relist the fake and give it another whirl.

As I said, I think ANY seller who has a coin which is deemed to be a counterfeit removed by ebay, should have all their coin listings automatically reviewed by ebay. If they are caught again...Out da door. Yes of course they could create another ebay name, and do it all again, but most have some degree of tenure on ebay and do not want to lose this.
