1842 Seated Liberty Half question

ajmanajman Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭
I have a question about this coin. I did not purchase this at the Heritage auction but from an eBay seller a couple of months later. My question is, is this a rare or scarce type coin, or did the bidding escalate in a war that seems to be way above what the PCGS price guide says it's worth? FWIW, I bought the coin for a little under what the realized price ended up at the auction. I just liked the look of it.

I think you will find many nice seated halves go for more than the current price guide. If I limit my bids to it I seem to be outbid more often than I win the coin.

Without seeing the coin in hand it would be hard to confirm, but this certainly appears to be a very early die state for the WB-102 coin

See this link for more information Wiley & Bugert

I think if you read the description and look at the raities, it might answer the question, if it is indeed the 102 in EDS

Varieties really are the last frontier in Numismatics-

The rarity is not appreciated because in most instances as there is not an adequate population so these can be promoted.

The small date is likely tougher than most think or are lead to believe

Thanks for the link pursuitofliberty. After looking at the info you provided, it appears that I may have the WB-101 variety, of which it states a die crack through the "O" on DOL. This is the most common of the two diffent die cracks of this variety.
