I like passing the peace pipe.
  • NA-03 is my choice, tall and strong gazing over a desert valley background.

I like the scenic look (and IMO) the coins should be about the subject and not shared with non-North American Indian devices (like pilgrims).

Any designs representing Treaties should be scrapped, since the settlers broached every single one they signed. Why commemorate treacherous, opprobrious behavior by our ancestors towards the native Americans? Cheers, RickO

I like #2, but the description of #6 is interesting:

"Design NA-06 represents the initiation of the initiation of the first formal written peace alliance. The hands of Massasoit and Governor John carver are shown exchanging a pipe during the peace pipe ceremony."

What were the Native American's smoking back then?? image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

the peace pipe makes it look all good, jmho image
  • 06 reminds me too much of the Peace Medal nickel.

I don't think the profile rock element of 03 would strike translate well on a coin.

If I had to choose, I like 05 the best.

5 or 6 here, probably be 1 or 2 though.
  • I like 1, 3, and 5. One thing I dislike about all of them is the "$1" instead of "One Dollar". Yeah it lends more room to the design, but to me it looks cartoonish, like play money. Why do they feel they have to dumb-down our coinage? I wish they would move away from this trend.

Most of the designs are too busy, with too many characters. Although the images of lone Indians on a couple are interesting, I'm not sure they best display the interpretation behind the 2011 issue well enough. Plus, Indians on the front & Indians on the back would appear to be just too much, in my opinion.

If I can read what the Commission's pattern of choices has been so far correctly, I would say they like symbolism more, and would likely go with #6, which I could definitely live with. Simple, "balanced" look to it, PLUS continues the theme of the previously-issued nickel......

    But just my guess.........

I was thinking the same thing,... word for word!

the idea of celebrating a treaty in general is a terrible idea.

they managed to find one they could work into "something we honored," however I wouldn't even go there with the whole "treaty" idea in the first place.

unfortunately, this machine has been made and set into motion....

    maybe congress could intervene...

that said, maybe NA-03 won't be too offensive.

Would a smoking implement be allowed in this day and age?

  • Is "none of them" an option? I have the same reaction with all of them.....demeaning and cartoonish (as someone else said) I see no honor in these designs, just blatant stereotyping (peace pipe?) and a

reminder of the settler's misdeeds........not a proud history, why try to re-write it and try to paint a pretty picture?

The indian/buffalo nickel is the best representation of pride and strength that was the american indian heritage in my opinion and today's artists would be better off using that as their inspiration for new designs.....

#5 is far and away the best. The pipe design is at best pedestrian and will thus probably be chosen.
