Anything cool found at the show??

Spent almost 4 hours there today. No problem for me finding parking at 9:45a, but I heard parking was a pain later in the day. Shoulder to shoulder people in the aisles.

Saw PonyExpress8 (Glenn), ThePennyLady (Charmy), WTCG (Wei), and HoleinOne1972 (Rob).
Picked up a 1921-D Merc in PCGS VF25 that I had agreed to buy from Glenn. Real nice guy. Pleasure to talk to (first time I had met him).
Picked up a roll of 2009-D dimes that I overpaid for, but wanted to be able to get some myself and knew other members may only need a few and not a roll, so I bought the roll and am parting it out.

Holeinone1972 showed me his peace dollars as a "show and tell". Nice....I like his 1923 the best image

Charmy was fun to chat with and tease....she takes it well, so it is all good. As usual, she had a ton of nice copper.

Wei was in for a short time then heading out.

My son was able to do the YN treasure hunt much better this year (he's too big for my shoulders now, so he had to do all the leg work himself...along with my wife). He had a small nap in the truck prior to his coming into the show (he woke up at 5:30am for some reason and was a tad tired). I felt bad as, when I introduced him to Charmy and then Glenn, he was really quiet and almost out of it......he is shy, but not normally that shy/quiet.
Walter Ostromecki was, as usual, AWESOME with the kids and the YN program.

For the dealers.....well, maybe it's just me as I age and my collecting grows a little more "refined", but I didn't find much for us.
Over the years, I have learned the handful or so of dealers with who it isn't even worth looking at their wares......."snidely whiplash", for those that recognize that moniker, South Hill Coins in Puyallup, and a few others. Had some nice chats with Dale Reubish and (I think it is) Mike from Silverdale (sold him a roll of 2010 SAEs to help fund my purchase of the coin from Glenn image ).

Met Doug Bird, for the first time. Had a nice chat with him and he was patient with me as I asked question after stupid question about EAC. Bought a VF 1809 1/2 cent from him. Wanted an 1810 that he had just purchased, and he was willing to sell, but I am trying to learn a bit more before spending THAT much on a raw early copper coin. Very nice gentleman to talk to.

As mentioned in another report I read, NO new PCGS Secure+ to be seen (think it was Mozin who mentioned that). Some CACs still out there, but not a ton that I noticed.
Still MANY raw coins. Prices seemed high still. Slabbed, or raw, it seemed prices were high. Some bartering, but some of the prices were so high, I didn't even bother.

Left the show, grabbed the family (by then, out napping in the truck again image ) and went to Red Robin's for my birthday burger and ice cream image

I agree with Bochiman, prices seemed very high, and often for mediocre material. I saw at least a half dozen common date, slabbed MS66 Morgans listed for $300+....these weren't Morgans with flash or even anything memorable about them.....wtf? I saw a lot of stuff that I've seen over and over and over again at past shows.....I swear even in the same spots in the same dealer's cases that were set up in the same areas on the bourse. Not much fresh stuff. Although Charmy had some pretty copper (Charmy I didn't say hi 'cause you were busy), and Eugene Bruder had some eye appealing type (as usual). Port Gardner Bay Coins far and away had the prettiest pieces from top to bottom....real eye appeal.

That's the name I was forgetting...Eugene Bruder. I spent some time at his table as well.
Didn't buy anything, but may still......

I also agree, and you weren't imagining it, that some of the stale items and stale dealers were all in the same place.
I can think of 2-4 of the top of my head like that. Their stuff doesn't sell, but they keep the same prices, show after show, year after year, and even put it in the same place. Makes it easier to ignore image

What's funny is that, a couple of shows ago, I tried to buy a toned franklin from John Howe, in a partially filled album. Offered above bid (it was slightly toned and had nice luster) but he only wanted to sell it complete with the album or if he could "remember to bring a replacement next time and if he remembered that he would sell it". Saw him today and just walked by. For his album, at the previous show, I had even seen a blast white (~$20 cheaper one) that I had offered to have him talk to the other dealer to get and still pay my offered price (figured that 'dealer-to-dealer' he would get a better price than I would).

I half-way think some of this guys don't want to make money unless it is a rip (and, John has never tried to rip me, so I am not saying that is necessarily his way of doing it, just that he doesn't seem concerned about making a sale when he isn't busy). John is also one of the only ones I still seel with an ACG slab in his case, show after show after show image
(I've watched him talk to Gene about have him "work' a coin to get it submitted to PCGS...or to get it submitted to a sub-par grading service if it were 'too far gone' just to get a higher grade to sell to customers......so I am pretty careful with him as well)

He also had that other similar looking one that was graded lower. I thought about buying that one.

I will most likely do this show again in the future, but as for this year's show it was a bust for me.

Bochiman (Ron), it was a pleasure to meet you and the family at the show. Hopefully, next year I will be able to display the inventory and not be on the table waiting list for this show. image

Thanks as well to Craig of Craig's Rare Coins for letting us meet up at his table.

Hi all. As many of you know, my computer crashed this past week. It's been very frustrating since the hard drive is "dead" and I hadn't backed anything up for a few months (never again will I wait that long to do a back up - please, I encourage all of you to go right now and back up your computer!!!). The good news is that it crashed just before I was coming here to Seattle where my computer guru brother lives (he used to work for Microsoft), so he helped me buy a new laptop and is loading everything I need (and more!) onto it today! Any way, I've been out of touch and sort of in limbo lately when it comes to computers and the internet. But hopefully, when I get back home, everything will start falling back into place.

I've been really enjoying spending some time with my brother. We just finished playing "beat your buddy's buns" (a card game with similarities to spades)! He's also in a jazz band and a concert band so I got to hear them rehearse on Thursday night since they have a couple concerts this week. He's also been wonderful at carting me back and forth to the show!

In any event, this is my first PNNA show here in the Seattle area and I'm having a blast. The show has been more than fantastic for me, all the new dealers I've met have been very kind and welcoming, and they even say they enjoy the music I play on my iPod speakers! I'm very sorry not to have been able to say hi to you SeattleSlammer, but you were right in that my table has been very steadily busy at this show. It's probably one of the best first shows I've ever done, and has far exceeded my expectations in every way. Even with the rain here, it's a very beautiful part of the country with all the sweet smelling tall pine trees, fresh air, country roads, and friendly people.

Back to the show, on Friday I saw several forum members, including BillyGoat, Mozin, of course Wei, PonyExpress, and a couple others that I can't think of right now (I'm tired, so please forgive me). I also really enjoyed chatting with Bochiman for quite a while and meeting his wife and cute little boy. My brother stopped by at the very end of the show today to pick me up so he came in to see what a coin show was like. He sat with me at my table while a scragly looking gentleman was sort of staring at my case, which he'd been doing for about half an hour. He really looked like a homeless man with long unkempt hair, bad teeth, and baggy clothes. He chatted quite a bit about this and that and then finally asked to see a coin (1909-S AU55 Indian cent). I showed it to him, gave him a price, and he quickly bought it peeling off several hundred dollar bills. My brother was quite surprised as he would never have guessed a guy who "looked like that" could afford a coin worth over $800. I told him that I've definitely learned never to judge a coin collector by his "cover"!

Any way, I'm headed home in the early afternoon tomorrow, and would love to come back to this show if space permits. I'm on a TSO status for now, but hope to be able to participate again next year. This show will definitely be on my calendar next year!

Great reports.. thanks all... The PNNA was one of my favorite shows when I lived in Seattle. Didn't Russ make this show? No one mentioned seeing him. Cheers, RickO

I looked and didn't see Russ...he may have been busy going to yard sales and hunting down dolls and old glass bowls.

I'm still looking for a generous soul who would have an extra pewter medalet made to commemorate the PNNA show this year. Swampboy had been providing these annually to me, but he couldn't make the show this time. Please PM me if we can make an arrangement for me to receive one of these. I've got cool stuff to trade, etc. Thanx!
  • Hi All,

I was fortunate to have time on Friday and Saturday to make the show. I met with PonyExpress8 (at Craigs table) and enjoyed our conversation, as well as seeing his coins. To my knowledge, PonyExpress8 was the only dealer to have a coin in the new PCGS Secure Plus holder with a + (PR65+CAM Barber Half - very nice, too). I also got the chance to meet ThePennyLady and a few other forum members that gathered at her table (Mozin comes to mind) - Charmy is great, loved the atmosphere at her table with song and wine, not to mention the great selection of copper. I only wish I had more time to peruse her coins as her table was always quite active (maybe that's why they call her Charmy image )

Most dealers told me that Saturday was better for foot traffic (typical at this show) and that overall it was a 'good' show. And, I have to agree with Bochiman that most of the 'all there, good coins' were overpriced (I'm talking PCGS prices, plus!).

For me, I enjoyed meeting with Tim (Port Gardner Bay Coins) and reviewing sample pages from the book I'm working on for his type set (he had an incredible array of coins displayed, too). I got the opportunity to image his coins last year at Pinnacle and feel quite honored to have done so. And, speaking of Pinnacle, I ran into Dan and got to shoot the bull a bit with him, too.

And finally, the usual suspects - got to chat with Karen and Greg from Coin and Stamp, Dave from B&I, Gene Bruder (although a bit crabby image ) Mike from Rogue Valley (and his son), Tony and Roy from SH (thanks for the dealer badge), Tom from Liberty Coin and Tom Allen and his wife.

As for the goods - Picked up a gorgeous '27 Buffalo from Tim at Port Gardner (PCGS MS66 CAC) and Tom Allen sold me a 1913 T2 Buffalo (PCGS MS66) which matches my T1 in PC67.

On the way home we were all reminded we live in the Emerald City as the weather turned for the worse as the sky went black, and it started raining buckets. This, of course, snarled the traffic on I-5... but hey, all in all it was worth it for this once a year show in Tukwila, WA.

    BGG

P.S. Forgot to mention that I met QuarterNut and got a signed copy of his book - great book, too!
