My Worst Coin show ever

I set up a table at my own club show Sunday. It was I have to say the biggest disappointment ive ever had in this hobby. Attendence was horrible and people only bought my cheap stuff in my bargain bins. When it came to my good material only a couple people even bothered to look at it. I got an offer for my 1913-S Type II buffalo nickel, but the guy wanted a rock bottom Greysheet price for it, which for what nice piece it was, i was NOT going to do. I tried walking around the floor with a few pieces, one dealer opened up his Bluesheet (Red flag right there) and offered me a price that i just felt insulted at. I couldnt even sell common gold for Bid!

All i have to say is AHHHHHHH

You'd do far worse buying coins and later having buyer's remorse for doing so.

Now you know the dealer thing isn't as easy as it may appear.

As for the specifics, I can't say much about the bargain bin sales, but at current time slabbed gold isn't particularly strong and it doesn't take much effort to be able to buy gold at back of Greysheet numbers.

As for the Bluesheet thing, the Bluesheet is a reference tool and shouldn't be raising red flags if a dealer looks at one. You'd be surprised how many coin series, even if they are graded by PCGS aren't any more or much more than Bluseheet numbers.

Many of the non professional dealers will say to you when you're trying to buy from them something about "Greysheet prices are so behind the times" or something similar. Except for a few series, that isn't true and there are even some coin series that aren't really salable even at their Bluesheet numbers.

does that mean most coin prices are indeed dropping or has it been that way for awhile..?

It doesn't mean prices are dropping. It's just the way the business works. Even during the best of times there are some coins that don't sell well.

What city and state was the show in?

The Masters Golf tournament probably had something to do with poor attendance this past Sunday. Golf viewers and coin collectors have similar demographics, mostly upper-middle-class white males, ages 40 on up. Every person that stayed home to watch golf on TV, meant one less customer at the show.

Sorry to hear about your disappointment. At very least, you gained more experience. Who knows, maybe the next time things will be better??

Attendance can be up or down for many reasons, some of which may not be apparent.

I'm sure some of us here would love to "take a peak" at what you displayed. image

If you'd said 'worst 3 day show' I would have suspected you were set up at this past weekend's Central FL show.....that was another dog, with mediocre attendance and not a lot going on (though I heard dealer to dealer Thur afternoon was pretty good).
Hopefully things will get better for you.

A wise old dealer once told me, sometimes you have buy your way out of a show. It's worked for me before. That may be a good opportunity to get a good buy if other dealers are having a bad show and need to raise cash.

I had a table at the same show and it was very slow, but I did sell some gold, a 100 oz silver bar and bought some 90% and other coins. Overall a slow show but I did OK mainly because of the coins I bought. Sunday was a warm sunny day and the second day of fishing season which may have had something to do with the low turnout. My opinion is that there should have been some advertising in local papers to attract customers, its expensive, but advertising works for the traveling gold and silver buyers, so why not for a coin show? Another local show is the monthly Parsippany show which is crowded every month, they have a large following even on sunny warm days. A annual club show needs to do a little more to get customers. Just my 2 cents worth

  • That was held at the Elks Lodge on Rt. 28 right? I was supposed to go to that show but had to work. Glad I didn't miss much. Just hope there wasn't any bust quarters there. Halfhunter are you local to Somerville? See you at the GSNA.
