Cool Farmers Market Find Seated Counterstamp

tydyetydye Posts: 3,894 ✭✭✭
Had the day off so I took my 3 year old to the farmers market. Beautiful day today so the place was packed. I was in search of coins and silver and my son cars and choo-choos

My son hit first with matchbox dump truck for 50 cents. I found quite a bit of 90% including a roll of barber quarters for 12x face. But my favorite piece was this one. I ponied up $25 for this. I did not even haggle on the price. Oh and my son found his Thomas stuff as were getting ready to leave. 3 brand new trains and 2 playsets for $40. Which is a bargain if know how much these are in the stores.

Intertesting tidbit pulled from the link below.

    Hobday, A.

Daguerreian, 14 East Main Street, Norfolk, Va., 1859-1860. He was listed in partnership as Burwell and Hobday; he boarded in Portsmouth. This is probably the same as "J. Hobday", imprinted in a daguerreian case. Information corrected to November, 1997; © 1996, 1997 John S. Craig

Thanks for the link Erickso1. Brunks did not have much info on the piece

Thanks for the replies. I was pretty happy finding this today. I had to tell someone because all I got from my wife was a whatever.

Sorry Gregg she is a keeper. I sold another counterstamp at Baltimore and I have been regretting it ever since

Nice original looking piece too. I like it.

If it weren't for buying Thomas items my collection would be much nicer.

A great buy. I think that it could bring $150., or more to an interested buyer.

Where I live there are farmers markets, antique markets and flea markets galore. Within 20 minutes of my house I can go to one every day except monday and tuesday. But usually just got to my favorite 2 on Wed and Sunday.

Thanks for the info on the value. But it has a home as the interested buyer already owns it.

    Wow, QN, that's amazing!

Trivia question for everyone else: One of the pieces in QN's album is actually catalogued as a foreign coin. Which piece, and which country?

I'm gonna guess the 1832 small letters. I don't know the country other than it's a Caribbean one. I may be wrong and it's the 1810. I suppose I could still be wrong after those two, but I doubt it.

QN: Do you have larger pics of the 1809 and 1819 coins?

Your first guess is the correct one. It is thought to have been done in Puerto Rico. Here is a link to an article I wrote a few years ago that includes this counterstamp: LINK

No, I don't, I just scanned these last night. They are both large prepared box style punches from some sort of smith (ie. Silver/gold/gun/etc.) I really need to take the time and shoot pictures of all of my countermarked coins, but too many coins and too little time...image

I am doing a type set of counterstamped coins (7070) I haven't taken pics in a while though. QN has some awesome CS coins!

Today I visited the farmers market where I purchased this counterstamp last week. The same guy was set up. I asked if he had anymore counterstamps. He told me he has quite a few but he keeps them for himself - this one was a duplicate for him. Needless to say I will be nagging him every week to bring out some more
