Thanks for pointing it out. I missed it while browsing the territorials in the upcoming auction.

Please do not take offense, but it is just my opinion, but its not cool posting a current auction unless you are the seller. We all spend hours searching for coins online, somthing like this just adds bidder to the pool. I have seen some auctions I was bidding on jump by 3-5 bidders after someone posted a live or upcoming auction here and lost out to other bidders. Even when I put high moon money bids on items.
Just my opinion, I will say it happens less now then a year ago.
May I suggest PM to a friend instead of a public notice

Isn't there a controvery about the "type 2" 1861 Clark Gruber $20, in that some think they are 1950's vintage counterfeits ? I have my suspicions. I wonder about this piece.
I am far from an expert in Territorial gold but it is indeed very suspicious. In December of last year PCGS published an article entitled Top 12 Rare Coin Buybacks – PCGS Puts its Money Where Its Mouth Is! in which the fourth largest on the list was a 1861/57-S Clark Gruber $20 MS63. I was party to that situation and saw the coin, it had many of the same characteristics of this piece although it was not on a different sized coin. The doubled profile, the overstruck reverse letters, remnants of the previous date, all very similar. I'll post pics of it when I'm back at the office later.
I am not proclaiming the Heritage coin to be one of these contemporary counterfits, I do not know that. Just saying that it sure is similar to the one that PCGS bought back.

If a seller posted a current auction, that would be spam. And that is frowned upon by far more individuals than that which you are complaining about.
<< <i>PQ, no offense, but if the OP hadn't posted this we would have missed some good info. And no, I won't be bidding. >>

If I were involved with territorial gold, which I am not, I would not be interested in this piece. As a collector who would like an example from a historical point of view, an odd ball item like this, regardless of its rarity would be a turn-off for me, given the expected price. This is the kind of piece that fellow with deep pockets who already had a nice example would want.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This is one of the coins. That's why it's now in a holder designating the piece as a "fantasy". >>
Gee, I never scrolled down to the slab pictures. :( My post, I suppose, was more a silent commentary on the lot description (which does eventually get to the point.)
