Newbie: does light green mean PVC on old copper?

I just got bagged on an 1853 half cent that should have gone about ms64bn. They gave it a genuine - 94 "altered surfaces".
I noticed that there were places where there was a bit of light green and overall it has a lighter green tone over brown look to it.
Is this PVC damage instead of natural toning. Would that be the reason for "altered surfaces?"

Thanks

  • And is there anything that can be done about it without ruining the coin.
    Is acetone safe on copper?

Difficult to identify without pictures. Could be verdigris, usually in specific spots (but could be a larger area). Manifests itself as a crystalline bump (commonly, but can be a film). PVC has a light green tinge and a 'slimey' look - again - usually. Hope this helps. Cheers, RickO

Sounds normal. Is it in the fields or the devices? Crevices or high spots?

Here is a beatuiful cent in a PCGS holder but when you blow it up in a large photograph to look a the die cracks the fields get a green tone to them.

  • Altered surfaces could be from a recoloring the coin could have gone through after cleaning? Corrosion would be another "bag".

  • Coin has been cleaned and recolored and they missed a spot. Probably an old Ketchup coin.
