1993 Thomas Jefferson Silver Dollars

Does anyone own these? How popular are they? I ask as I never see one shown here or talked about. One of our greatest presidents and a Founding Father. There's a 3 piece set mentioned in the red book consisting of a dollar, nickel and $2 note. Anyone have one to show? How about the silver dollars?

the set of which you speak is the "Jefferson Coin & Chronicles" set.
After all, besides building our Democracy he invented the coat hanger.
Love the guy!

In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
the nickels are (matte, SMS, SP) take your pic and usually in the 69 range
and the hard cover will probably keep them that way in original packaging
mintage of 167,703
the glues or something has made the reverses of the nickels tone yellow/gold
and I have been watching the progression
I now have some peripheral toning on the neighboring dollar
the dollars have occasional spots (probably from copper)
the sets have been selling in the $45-70 range on eBay
with around 10% have a star note - getting a premium for these
the reverse of the dollar is cool, the obverse looks like one of them classic commems
I have one on my desk if a get a chance I will take a couple of photos.
The sets can be bought for very cheap with little collector interest, last I checked anyway.

I do own this piece:
I subjcted this dollar to the rigors of circulation, well artificially in my pocket, with other silver coinage.
I now have pulled it from circulating in my pocket, it's in VF/XF condition.
The pic of the commem was taken when the piece was in AU condition.
I like the look with a little wear.
Thomas Jefferson did more than his share in the founding of this country. We can thank him for the Declaration of Independence and the Louisiana Purchase. As is the case with most presidents his second term in office was not as successful as his first. His second fours years were marked by a useless shipping embargo that was intended to keep us out of a war with England or France. Unfortunately it only caused an economic recession for U.S. citizens.
Jefferson has always been an enigma. One the one hand he wrote the Declaration of Independence which set fourth the idealism upon which this country was founded. On the other he held slaves and never came out against the institution. For all his brilliance he was a very poor money manager who died broke. At the time of his death he was making plans to hold a lottery to raise funds to pay his debts.
my only wonder is why the OP is enthralled with them??
my only wonder is why the OP is enthralled with them??
The OP isn't alone, I like them too. I disagree with your assessment of the design, I like the portrait and the reverse. Mintage is high (around 267,000) because these sold well when they were released. I wouldn't describe collector interest as "nil", these just aren't scarce enough to command much of a premium.
As for trying to acquire 100 of the '94 coin & currency sets, that would not be an easy task. I doubt anyone has significant quantities of these and I'm sure a number of the sets were cracked to get the nickel.

I like these coins. I'm still waiting for someone to show me more than 100 of them in government packaging. How about 50? How about a dozen?
Seems like they should be out there based on the mintages ?

<< <i>I don't make fun of anyones collecting interests no matter how silly they seem to be.
I like these coins. >>
I agree with you philosophy and I have only seen pics of the commem, I like it too. Never knew about the set, but it sound neat!
Hoard the keys.
that being said, Im not a fan of the coin, but I can see the nickel guys needing one.
<< <i>Please accept my apologies. Not making fun of that at all...it just seems everything else you have is TOP SHELF...just wondering why you were sniffing around modern commems. Seems odd and was wondering if you were gearing up for a buyer or something.
>>
Thank you and accepted but............odd? You think it's odd? Odd things happening in the coin business? No, really? Why never!
I asked an old friend of mine who used to work at Ruth's Chris steak house back in the day, "man oh man you have access to such great ribeye's, bet you eat a lot of steak huh? " She told me, nah, the chefs there generally order McDonalds for their breaks!
I don't know if that's a good analogy or not but what I'm saying is I like em! I just like the dang things and so I'm buying them.
That's one of the greatest things about the hobby. It's FUN! With all the serious sh-t life hands us , here's a little place where all of us can visit, no matter what our finances whether we're mega money CEO's or students, there's a place here for us to learn about our history, or history in general, art, commerce, and all the things attached to numismatics and also have FUN!
That's what I'm doing. Having fun

i like how AMERICA is in the trees... is the word incuse?
Liberty: Parent of Science & Industry
I did a search on eBay for 'Jefferson Currency Set'
and found 37 listings
was scrolling down to link a pic for you and did a BIN on this one (a star note for you)
edit to add, when searching the listings, there is a seller with more than 10 available at $55+ shipping
seller coinsbybobby - maybe you can buy 100 from them
A couple of quotes from the set:
"A fitting tribute to the father of America's decimal coinage system"
"In 1785, Congress enacted legislation to establish America's first national coinage. This new monetary system was based upon principles articulated by Thomas Jefferson a year earlier in his Notes on the Establishment of a Money Unit, and of a Coinage for the United States."
they are made to replace regular notes during production
but are much rarer than regular notes, so some people collect them
I used to be famous now I just collect coins.

<< <i> find nothing at all interesting in this coin. THe portrait is unattractive, the rear design elements are poorly laid out. Mintage is high, collector interest is Nil...

First, collector interest is very strong in the Jefferson $ issue. They sell for a handsome premium to greysheet.
Second, I have 16 coin & currency sets in stock and 5 on feepay. I've bought & sold large quantities of the c&c sets on multiple occasions. The sets with star notes and fancy serial numbers are the keepers.
