America the Beautiful 5 oz. Bullion collector's edition

I did not know the the Mint was going to issue a collector's version of the 5 oz. silver coasters and that all of the bullion coins would be issued at the same time (mid year 2010). Maybe it will be a proof.....

    PULL!

You could use them as clay pigeons in trap shooting

    PULL!

and then sell the holey results to Lord Marcovan

    PULL!

"Paper-thin" kinda dulls my interest in the 5-oz'er

<< <i>The new silvers coins have been a production challenge, according to Mr. Moy who described difficulties in complying with the terms of the legislation.

"The law was very specific," Moy stated at a public coin forum. "They said it had to be a certain diameter and it had to be 5 ounces. Well, there isn’t a 5 ounce blank out there, so we had to get this custom made. Then, because it was 3 inches in diameter, well we’ve got a 5 ounce piece of silver and we stretch it out to a 3 inch diameter, it’s paper thin."

Moy continued to explain additional issues in incusing the edge lettering on the .999 fine silver coins by commenting that the first tests resulted in "crumples." The Mint has since made "breakthroughs," as Moy described. >>

I'm not sure you're interpreting the story correctly. They clearly say "As a side note, there is a possibility that numismatic versions of the coins will be produced at some point, and sold directly by the Mint." So it's just a possibility.

"They are twice the size of early US silver dollars, like the Morgan and Peace Dollars, and nearly double that of today’s American Eagle Silver, which is 1.598 inches in diameter and includes a single ounce of silver."

Aren't "twice" and "double" the same thing? Wonder who authored that? Just sounds funny!

I've said it before, I don't see how they could be 'paper thin' at 5oz and 3" across. That's barely bigger than a standard 5oz and those are by no means thin.

I'm a buyer if they're close to spot or with a mild premium, say $2/oz or so tops.

The about areas of the mentioned coins:
    Silver Dollar (Morgan,Peace) - 1.77sq in < one ounce
American Silver Eagle - 2 sq in one ounce
ATB 3" coasters - 7.1 sq in five ounces
This adds credence to "I don't see how they could be 'paper thin' at 5oz and 3" across."

For reference: standard Aussie 5oz round is close to 2.5" across and about 7.9mm thick.

56 coins and it comes to 19.2 pounds!
(law says .999 fine silver instead of 90%)

(I want to see the display case from HSN)

(I inherited these from Grandpa, who died trying to lift them.)

They should be able to get out the W and proof eagles if they're gonna burn up that much silver.

These coins won't be "paper thin", but they will 3X diameter of a quarter and not even 2X the thickness or
almost 2X the diameter and about the same thickness of an ASE

No more APE fractionals, AGE fractionals, Buff fractionals and the last Spouse I want is coming up towards the end of this year, so, silver hockey pucks for me.

I hope they aren't making them 3 feet across instead of 3 inches.

Odd ... no mention of packaging/sales options from the Dept of Interior who is authorized to sell them from the parks/conservation units being honored.

[CORRECTION: Director, National Park Service is legislatively authorized to purchase directly for resale.]
