If a coin upgrades at PCGS, where would they place it at the next grade level.....low end or high en

For example, if I sent in a coin (let's say PCGS AU55) for regrade and PCGS felt the coin was worthy of an upgrade to 58, does that mean that PCGS felt this coin was low end for a 58 or high end? image

Just curious what some of your thoughts are on regarding this matter.

Thanks.

Depends how much it was undergraded. In another thread DW posted that he has seen coins go a grade up and a + so far. This thread.

"Don't fall into a trap thinking that the only upgrade that you might get through the Secure Plus line is a +. I have seen several coins that upgraded a full point and even a few that upgrade a full point plus the + !!"

Unless PCGS is willing to admit to a significant error in the original grade, I certainly would not expect the new higher grade to also be given the Plus. I would expect the new higher grade to be at the low end of the new grade.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I guess the only way to really find out is to submit the upgraded coins for Secure Plus, huh?

I sent a PM recently to Don Willis asking this exact question (title of thread) and am now waiting for a response.

It sounds like every coin has its own merits and will be judged accordingly, but I'd sure like to get an answer back from Don.

I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but I don't understand why this is even a question. The results should vary for different coins and be based upon what PCGS thinks of each individual coin.

Given that grading is not an optimized science (not even a primitive science), it is entirely possible for a coin to upgrade a full step and a +. If everyone would read - and I mean READ - Don Willis's responses, it is clearly stated that upgrades happen and will continue. There would be a lot less of these 'autopsy' threads if everyone would carefully read the presentation and Don's answer thread. As most here know, I am not a kool-aid drinker. These hair splitting questions and 'what-if's' are ridiculous and non value added. I believe that all the information is clearly available to answer most of these inquiries. Cheers, RickO
