Is This A "D/D" on this 1938 D Buffalo Nickel???????

I need some help. I purchased this 1938 D Buffalo Nickel the other day in my local coin shop. It is in the Type 1 original green holder and is graded MS-65. Looking at the reverse, does the "D" mintmark look like a "D/D"? I am not that familiar with overstrikes. I don't think I want to take it out of the holder to regrade, because the holder is the very first type that was used by PCGS to grade coins (I think?). It is not like the next generation of green holders. The labeling on the front looks like it was typed and detached from a cardboard tape. No barcode of any sort. The back just has Professional Coin Grading Service on it with a dark green background on it. I would appreciate your thoughts on the "D/D". The holder is in very good shape with no scratches or chips on it. Also, if it is a "D/D" what type of value is it since it is a MS-65?

Thanks for your help.

SURE LOOKS LIKE D/D.VERY NICE COIN.

  • I really hadn't paid any attention to those areas until you just mentioned it, but I took my glass out and looked closer and there are parallel lines within the lettering. Like I say, I'm not an expert by any means.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know what you mean when you say notching.

  • Looks like a strike doubling to me from what i can see on the mintmark

Is the D mint mark crooked? -- just another ignoranamus!

Yes, that's an extra D. However, these are more common than most people realize.

    Great pics!

It seems pretty obvious that it is .... a D/D.

    Very nice. image
  • Thanks everyone. So it is a D/D. Great. Also, now that "notching" has been defined for me, I don't think there is any on the coin.

Nice find... should have it noted. Cheers, RickO

I guess to have it noted, it would have to be taken out of the rattler holder and regraded. I kind of like the holder. It is in very good condition. I think I'll just leave it in the holder. Any idea on what it might be worth as PCGS MS-65 with it being a D/D and in an original PCGS first generation holder?

The big $$$ are for MS66 and up I see MS65's go for 100 you may get more for the holder but hard to say not haveing it noted on the holder. It's crazy if PCGS does not put it on the holder then it is not one to some Collectors, Buyers. image

    Hoard the keys.
  • I paid $75 for it, so I guess I didn't do too bad. Like I said, I like it is in the original PCGS rattler holder. Looks kind of neat, if you ask me.

Leave it in the Rattler as there are more obvious D OVER D . Not much of a premium.
