Has this 2C piece been cleaned?

dsessomdsessom Posts: 2,481 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked this 2 cent piece up at the ANA Money show for cheap. I figure it's been cleaned and won't grade, but I liked it. Is it an old cleaning? If was was AU and not XF, I wouldn't be so suspicious.
What do you think?

The date looks repunched. Probably listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide (Fivaz/Stanton).

Yes, cleaned, and even it was an AU coin, the colors should still make you suspicious.
Nice repunching on the '1', and it sports the Fancy '5' also, though I'm not sure if all 1865 two centers show this style (I know the 1865 IHC's have plain 5 and fancy 5 varieties).
That said, if it was cheap and you are happy with it, that's all that matters.

It seems so. Maybe blue-bonnet'd too. But I like it and wouldn't hesitate buying it if the price were appropriate.

Whoa, that is some big-time doubling on the "1".

It's the fancy 5. (added: they made both types)

Definitely a repunched date. I think it's the one listed as FS-002.5 Breen 2386.
It should have a little bar between the top of the 5 and the ball of it, I think I see it in your pic.

If not it's a very similar RPD

Does look cleaned but pleasantly re-toned.

    << <i>I believe I see a repunched 8 too, left side bottom loup >>

Look at the top ball of the 8, above it you can see the center of the other ball. That matches the FS-002.5 pics in the CPG.

I agree... cleaned. The color is spotty and what looks like "luster" is the artifact of the old cleaning... cool repunched date though... L

Not too bad of a pickup -- while it has been cleaned or recolored, it is beginning to retone.
If you give it the chance to continue the retoning process, you might end up with a nice little
    coin.
