<< <i>I only make purchases that have very little -EV. I've made that my practice in all of my business endeavors and it's served quite well. I respect everyones opinions and I weighed the fact that his pics are small, negative feedback, etc...

It seems that 99% of the raw cards or auto's that are put on here for evaluation get negative feedback from the same group of people. I'm not sure if those people have just been burned a lot in the past or if they just have a "glass half-empty" approach to life in general. At any rate, I've been successful in the vast majority of business gambles I've taken and I've been hugely successful in the number of sportscard gambles I've taken even though the monitary amounts are nowhere near the amounts of most business gambles. Either way, if the card arrives and it's been chewed up by a rabid dog then I'll request a refund, file a SNAD, etc... The absolute worst that could happen is that I lose $300 and there is a .0000000000001 chance of that. I think I'll still be able to eat if that happens.

One thing I will say is that I'll probably never buy from the seller again even if the Ryan is a 7 or higher and I'll also give him a 1 star in the shipping time category. He emailed me today with the tracking info that he got when he shipped it yesterday. It has been a week since I bought the card. THAT is unacceptable in my book. >>

I don't read a lot these types of threads, so I don't know who all the 'Negative Nellies' would be. I will say, though, that at least in this thread nobody has given you negative feedback. What people have said, more or less, is that "I wouldn't have paid that price for that card". A sentiment which I share, incidentally, for reasons outlined in my earlier post.

If you want to make money flipping cards then probably the worst market you could enter is the one for raw, high profile vintage cards. There is virtually no upside, given the savvy and experience of the people against whom you are competing. You would be much better off working in the post-1990 market (buying high-end PSA 9 Jordan inserts, for example, and getting those into PSA 10 holders) since the knowledge base of your competitors in these markets is much weaker.
  • Hmmm, it's looking worse and worse. This seller is lying and stiffing ppl both left & right. His cards are:

    1) sometimes "lost in the mail"
    2) tiny scan like PSA 8s but actually look like VG-EXs (he obviously doctors the scans)
    3) has a long list of neg feedback
    4) knows what he's doing

Sorry, I think seller's the shark here, the OP the fish to be eaten.

I bet $10 that the Seaver arrives with a "wrinkle."

    Why?

His auction for a Seaver RC that ended on Feb 28 (a different card)....
"This is a BEAUTIFUL card with ABSOLUTELY NO CREASES OR WRINKLES, no markings, pinholes, paper loss, or any other major damage."

    This auction...
"This is a BEAUTIFUL card with ABSOLUTELY NO CREASES, no markings, pinholes, paper loss, or any other major damage."

Notice that he took out the words "or wrinkles" from his description. I can only think of one reason why he'd do that.

Guy, I think Tommy means me, but in his defense, he isn't very bright. If he was he would have seen that the negative in my first post was about him as a human. The second part of my post actually supports buying at prices low enough to withstand minor description errors/omissions and the like.

lol, yeah I'm not bright. I guess I just "lucked" my way into that double major and all of my assets. Captain Kirk is MUCH brighter.

  • Just another thing to add as I've already gone down the road with that seller. If it does come in and is deemed too much of a gamble for you and you decide you want to return it, move quickly. email him and/or file the SNAD. Get the ball rolling. He is extremely slow on settling disputes and only moved on my dispute after I stopped communicating and had paypal decide.
  • storm888storm888 Posts: 11,701 ✭✭✭

Because of the skill level of the folks here - and because
PayPal is in the mix - there is ZERO risk in gambling with
    the instant seller.

BUT, it would be silly to think that the seller might be an
"idiot." He knows exactly what he is doing and it works.

say tommy makes $100 bucks on the card. does he take into account the 3 hours he spent posting about it? for a person with lots of pots on the stove, I'd think time means money.

<< <i>say tommy makes $100 bucks on the card. does he take into account the 3 hours he spent posting about it? for a person with lots of pots on the stove, I'd think time means money. >>

not really. It's like I was telling Burgundy a while back, the thrill is mainly what I enjoy about collecting. When I opened that set lot a while back and found the cards to be in better condition than expected it was a huge rush. I enjoy opening vintage packs for the same thing. I get more of a kick out of stuff like that than I do selling a car or property and making much more money.

If the card comes and it's a real beater (which is most likely) then I'll send it back, but if it comes better than I expect then it will be pretty cool. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Thanks to everyone for their input and I'm sorry this thread took a turn for the worst.

I enjoy reading your threads Tommy. You are willing to share your purchases (and the like) with us, and you always seems to stir up a bit of controversy.

    Good luck with the Seaver.

Received card today and I'm very pleased. Card has no wrinkles or any hidden flaws that I might have expected. It measures perfectly with the other '67's I have. I sampled it against a random 8-10 cards. I think it will definitely 6 or 6.5 and has a shot at a 7 on a good day.

Looks good. Hope it doesn't grade as miscut.
  • EOT not to mention the multiple fisheyes.

<< <i>EOT not to mention the multiple fisheyes. >>

He's guaranteed my money back if it doesn't grade and it is the exact same size if not bigger than every '67 I've compared it to. The edges are perfectly straight other than the slight rough cut just like a number of the '67's I have graded.

Edit to say that I've submitted well over 500 cards to PSA and have had 3 come back EOT. 2 of those graded 8 and 9 respectively in the most recent group sub and the third one was a '61 common that regraded as an 8.

Im not trying to stir more things up in this pot...just my opinion...I dont think that card will be slabbed. The bottom left corner looks altered, the top right half of the border appears altered, plus, it must be either miscut/diamond cut or maybe its just tilted but I would first go with miscut/diamond cut...thats using my eyes cuz I am not using a jruler. If its not miscut then I would go with the possibility of it being trimmed on that right border. Even if it was tilted, the borders just dont seem to match up.

But I dont have it in hand and I hope Im wrong. It's a shame when nice cards like a Seaver rookie are altered.

didn't ask. It's $14 to find out so I'm not sweating it.

I could post a picture of Ted Williams' head in an ice chest and people would say it was fake or had been altered. Every single thread on here with a raw card or an auto question gets the same group of people saying it's altered, fake, etc...

If the percentage of cards or autos were fake or altered to the extent that people post about on here then no cards would ever get graded.

I guess I've just been lucky in that I've never bought an altered card or tried to get one graded. That '65 set that I bought when I first came back to collecting that I sent back because everyone said the cards were trimmed sold for almost $3500 when the seller sent the cards to SGC just to prove a point.

<< <i>The bottom left corner looks altered. >>

Well I'm not part of the same group that always replies so to me that bottom corner does look funky. Could be your scan that is making it look that way.

But it's still a very nice looking Bill Denehy card. image
  • hammeredhammered Posts: 2,671 ✭✭✭
The lower left does look strange, could be altered or could be the scan. The left border (easier to see on the reverse side, where it's on the right) looks like it could be partially trimmed.
I hope not. If it's unaltered, I think it's a 7 even with the fisheyes.

I think it's the scanner that's making that bottom left look funny. The borders are all even. Anyway, it's packaged up with the other 55 '67's I have going to California so we'll see.

I never said everyone on here was clueless, in fact I've learned the majority of stuff that I know about collecting from people on here. All I said was that the same naysayers cry EOT or fake or altered anytime someone posts a scan of something. I guess the majority of collectors are just pessimistic from being burned too often. Hope I don't get that way.

Cut looks a little weird to me too, but glad to hear it measures up. Good luck with the slabbing.

I'd send it in with a few other higher value cards rather than alone though. Onesie-twosies always seem to get killed for me.

    Otherwise:

    $5 shipping to Newport Beach
    $14 Grading fee
    $16.95 for return shipping.

    That's a $35.95

welldone. i hope it gets holdered.

you should know that i just spent over 20% more money at the grocery store than you spent on that Seaver card.

on Wednesday evening, my son will be returning home from college for a few days to visit and i expect most of the food to be gone by the time he goes back next Monday.

a few weeks from now, you'll still have your card.

I don't think the card is trimmed - the wear "makes sense" - likely stored for some time with the left edge upright, hence more wear on the upper left corner and the dinged lower left corner, likely from items being stored and placed on top of the "card pile" - the right side shows less wear from being stored on the bottom.

That being said, the card should not receive a 7, but again good luck...maybe I put the "reverse jinx" on it, and it will now come back a 7 or better. LOL

Here is our entire conversation about the Garbage Pail Boxes I had for sale. I'd appreciate you not telling lies about me. And that's what it was a BOLDFACE LIE. At no time did I cop an attitude with you.

    thedutymon : Afternoon,
What do you want per box?
    Thanks
    Neil

Corvette1340 : Neil, I honestly have no idea other than what I see that they've brought on ebay in the recent ending auctions. I've been told that the 12th, 13th, and 14th series are the best. The 8th series brings $30-$40 dollars and it seems to be the worst for some reason. You are welcome to make an offer before I put them on ebay.
    Thanks
    Tommy

    thedutymon : Tommy,
I am sure you are wanting more than I am willing to pay. I buy and sell these all the time.
You said you had the following:

2 boxes of 8th Series Average Retail $15-30 box
1 box of 9th Series Average Retail $15-30 box
1 box of 10th Series Average Retail $18-35 box
2 boxes of 12th Series Average Retail $20-30 Box (Two just sold for $28 each)
2 boxes of 13th Series Average Retail $20-30 box (Two just sold for $28.00 each)
2 boxes of 14th Series Average retail $20-30 box

I'll give you $180 total plus reasonable shipping, that is the low Retail, no E-Bay fees and I pay shipping, Paypal Gift.

    Let me know
    Neil

Corvette1340 : thanks for the offer but I'll pass.

    Tommy

Corvette1340 : The 10 boxes of Garbage Pail Kids brought $448.13 on ebay. They ended tonight.
